Finally, someone decides to make a CD of Tennessee Ernie Ford that goes outside the norm of his hits. This collection includes two of his earliest religous recordings "Somebody Bigger than You and I" and "I Am A Pilgrim". It also contains the Christmas song "Little Town of Bethleham". From a great, but lesser known album "Gather 'Round" come "Browns Ferry Blues", "Black is the Color of my True Love Hair", "Old Blue", and "Freight train blues". Early boogie recordings include "Smokey mountain boogie", "Milk 'em in the morning blues", "Blackberry boogie", "Country junction", and "Shotgun boogie". Two duets "Hey goodlooking" and "Cool cool kisses" are found as well. More of his beloved hymns are represented by "Whispering hope", "Count your blessings", and "Beautiful isle of somewhere." His best country recordings include "River of no return", "You don't have to be a baby to cry", "Give me your word", "Dark as a dungeon", "Sunny side of heaven", "Born to lose", "There'll be no teardrops tonight" and "Sweet dreams". Best of all, his 1965 recording of Sixteen Tons is found here. Ernie recorded to imitate/mock the rock 'n roll music that was popular in music at that time. And of course, the original country classic "Sixteen Tons" of 1955 fame is found as well.
Hats off to this record label for providing a great compilation in which most of the recordings are new to CD. It's a shame that Capitol and Word records don't release more of this great music from albums such as "Everything is Beautiful", "The New Wave", "The Folk Album", "My Favorite Things", "World of Country and Pop Hits", and the Civil War album sets. He was a great singer with versatility. Thanks See-For-Miles label. Bless your Pea Pickin' Hearts!
