5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, August 16, 2006
This review is from: Ep (Audio CD)
I am not going to say anything profound. However, this EP IS profound. It hypnotizes me with its lyricism, quietly bold sensuality, some of the best songcraft and writing you will ever hear.

This was my first exposure to Owen. I have not been disappointed by anything they/he (Mike Kinsella) has produced.

This group, this music is so slept on it is ridiculous.

4.0 out of 5 stars a step back in the right direction, September 29, 2004

The Owen EP, even in its short length, eclipses his previous efforts on the "No Good..." LP. It takes the folky, more rocked out style he adapted on the said LP, but adds the lush instrumentation and beauty that made his debut album as well as his live performance so awe-inspiring. The first song on this EP is without a doubt his best work yet, and leans much more towards the Owen you might already know. The rest of the album is more of a step away from his previous efforts, and includes much more mature lyrical content, near perfect sounding recording quality (he records all of his albums in his own home, never at a professional studio), and in addition to the layers of his signature guitar work and drumming, he's added a lot more elements to his songs, even more so than usual. At times you'd think he has an orchestra of bandmates by his side, but alas its still just Mike Kinsella, and only him. Doing what he does best, and continuing to bloom into one of the greatest songwriters most people don't give the time of day. This is the precursor to an up and coming "Owen LP" which I was informed will be released in the fall, so if the material on this EP is any kind of indication to what he's got in store for us, then I'll be happy to say I'll be there loving every second of it.

definitely a step forward for him. the songs have a slightly different sound without sounding immediately unlike previous efforts. tracks soar from beginning to end, the whole set is perfect. after listening you are left with only one desire; to indulge in the next outing, a full length scheduled for the fall.

Mike, you keep blowing me away with your songwriting and musical chops!! This ep has got to be some of the best melodic songwriting I've heard all year; can't wait for the full length in fall. Keep up the great work and please continue to produce Mike! This is exactly what I'm looking for.

I love the first two Owen CDs (as well as the split) so it's no surprise that I'm digging this one too. Tracks one and four are stand-outs but all five songs are solid. And he even included the lyrics in the liner notes this time. Hopefully he's not getting bored because I sure as hell am not.

"As your lover I have my doubts, that you kiss your mother with that mouth". Keep it up, Mike.

4.0 out of 5 stars mike kinsella at best, May 8, 2004
This review is from: Ep (Audio CD)
capn jazz gave him a chance to sing in "hey ma do i hafta choke on these?" and i knew he was just not a drummer for his brother. and american football proved that even more. but owen seemed to be just music to sleep to with cheesy lyrics. but this ep is great. the first song is the BEST song he's ever wrote. and everything else is like most of his other owen stuff but with better lyrics and i think the other intruments help out a lot too(yes he's now not the only member of the band). i wish there was more but it's ok because i think he's gonna come out with another full length pretty soon because that's what most people do after they come out with an ep.
