The majority of commentaries about Ephesians have been theological (focusing on doctrinal teaching), informational (focus on historical context), or devotional (focus on daily reminders for application). I believe all good commentaries should cover these, but this commentary series goes beyond this. Whereas most commentaries miss the ecclesiastical (how to view the church today), incarnational (how to live it out now), this Spirit-filled life NT Commentary series aims higher and puts the focus on the believer's ministry in Christ.

Though this commentary is not as exhaustive as some commentaries it is scholarly. My recommendation goes out to you mainly because of the dynamic kingdom principles that it highlights that most commentaries miss. I like how it teaches on the believer's identity, authority, and power in Christ.

In the book of Ephesians that I am now studying he outlines it as follows:

1:3-14 The Believer's postion of security in Christ

1:15-23 The Believer's purpose and Destiny

2:1-10 The Believer's place of authority

2:11-22 The Believer's Call to Unity

3:1-21 The Believer's Revelation of the Mystery

4:1-16 The Believer's worthy walk and equipping for ministry

4:17-5:14 The Believer's Spirit-Enabled Purity

5:15-6:9 The Believer's understanding of the will of God for family and lifestyle

6:10-24 The Believer's Warfare and Victory

This is a great product for growing as a person, Christian and understanding the church's role in today's time. The way it was set up and explained, I felt was superb. I already understood that Jack Hayford was excellent but this publication made me have more respect for his leadership.

Excellent commentary. I use a Spirit filled Bible so this commentary is excellent to study from. It has exact scripture, commentary and review questions.

I was looking forward to this commentary but when I received it, I was disappointed. I felt that it was more devotional, light in depth and was more sermon like. I ended up buying the Holman Bible NT commentary set. While the quality of each commentary may vary, the set as a whole gave me the depth that I was looking for - theological and practical application. My hope was that this Ephesians/Colossians commentary would be in depth but it fell short. I originally was looking at buying individual commentaries on the NT books from DA Carson, Moo, Bruce, Fee, etc but found that to be too pricy for a non-pastor like myself. So, I looked for commentaries that quoted the theologians that I respected (but didn't get bogged down in the 100 ways to interpret the Greek meaning that some of these individual commentaries get into). I thought that the Holman Commentary set did this. The book of Romans commentary by Ken Boa is very top notch. So, if you aren't a theology major or Pastor - I recommend the Holman vs the individual Spirit Filled Life commentaries. Note: for those of who come from the charismatic camp, I have not seen any cessationist view points in the Holman set.
