This review is from: Epic of Gilgamesh (Audio CD)
It is a real misfortune that this recording is no longer available. Abed Azrie is a great musician and poet who has, with this work, made available the aural experience of one of the greatest treasures of human narrative, the epic of the great king, Gilgamesh, and his friend, Enkidu. Azrie has translated the ancient Mesopotamian work into French, but for this performance, he sings and recites in Arabic, with accompanying music composed and performed by himself and some associates, including the very important composer/musician, Marcel Khalife. The booklet includes a synopsis of the Gilgamesh story, but it would be important for anyone listening to have become familiar with the great tale--an easy and enjoyable task, since there are several very fine translations of the work and it is not long nor difficult to read. With a sense of the story, a listener can easily sink into the nearly hypnotic beauty of Azrie's recitation and singing. With the text at hand, it should be easy to follow the sections. Of course, none of this is possible if the recording is not available--a reason to re-issue it immediately. This wonderful work should be available and enjoyed.
