8/3/2014 edit: I have to do it...this album just absolutely deserves 5 stars. I still prefer other albums from the Devy catalog to this one...but it's almost two years after the release and I still (believe me, I have lisetend to this C.D. over 100 times) listen to this one like it's new to me. Fantastic music all around from beginning to end and it still has that sense of wonderment to it. Buy it and thank me later.

(Original Review)
I read an interview with Devin recently in which he stated something to the effect of "If you like my stuff, you will probably like Epicloud. If you don't like my stuff, if what I normally do annoys the s*** out of you, than you probably won't like it." I think that's really the best way to sum up this album. While that statement could describe every Devin Townsend release, I think it's especially true of this one.

I should probably wait a week or two before I review this, but I've listened to it in entirety a few times already and want to get this out there. I so badly want to give "Epicloud" 5 stars but just won't let myself do it. Epicloud is no doubt amazing, fun, and well, epic. However, since he's such a damn genius, I can only rate Devin Townsend as compared to himself, and I've enjoyed other releases of his more than this. At the same time though, I wouldn't change a thing about "Epicloud" so I'm not exactly sure how to explain myself...

I've heard the word "epic" (obviously) thrown around a lot about this album. It is a great word to explain the album in a breath though. Listening to this, it just sounds BIG!

I am a 53 year old music lover. Don't be fooled by the METAL tag you see attached to Devin's music. Sonic would be a better tag. I truly believe Devin is one of the misuderstood musical geniuses of our day. The landscapes vary radically, but it always draws you in. Highly recommended for lovers of anyone from the Beatles to Iron Maiden. Just keep an open mind and someday you will find.....Devin

I'm giving this album 5 stars because it's a great album. There are some truly wonderful songs on here. I have to think that with some airplay, "Kingdom", "Grace," "Where We Belong," and "Save Our Now" could all be popular songs with the masses. As it is, I believe Devin will remain a "secret" among hard rock/metal aficionados. So, if you like hard rock or metal, especially if you grew up in the 1980's cutting your metal teeth on stuff like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, et. al. then you would like this album.

Devin's signature wall of sound production is in full effect on these tracks. His skill in mixing and producing albums is, in my opinion, among the greatest of all musicians. In fact, I can't think of another hard rock musician currently working who is as adept with production as he is. Devin writes the songs, sings, plays guitar, records, produces, and mixes his albums, almost always. He's a true tour de force of a talent and this album showcases his abilities.

In my opinion, the album starts off slowly. I like "Effervescent" for what it is. But, it's kind of "whatever" to me. It's an appetizer, and at 44 seconds, one shouldn't expect more. It does set you up to expect something unusual, though. Then, "True North" comes in with Anneke Van Giersbergen singing, "I love you, I need you, I've always been around you," sounding like the magical music fairy here to bless us with something amazing. "True North" is a good, heavy, kind of progressive song. But, then, there's "Lucky Animals." Every once in a while, there comes a song by Devin Townsend that I really don't like that much. It's rare, honestly. Some might not do much for me, but it's rare that I actively dislike them. I actively dislike "Lucky Animals.

I'm not one for lengthy reviews but there are only five reviews here now, so I thought I would throw another one on the pile.

First off, Epicloud is good. I have listened to it five times through, and my appreciation is still building. Some real transcendance on display, especially the masterful transitions between songs, and the ambient textures that come and go.

Song-wise, an eclectic mix of mainstream Townsendia, but especially well-paced, so the balls-out pounders feel like a party is breaking out and then the slower numbers come as blessed relief.

I have to say I like this album better than the previous four. One of my favourite songs in the collection is actually an ABBA-flavoured iTunes demo called "Take My Ego".

As an aside, I'd like to hear the title track, but it's only available on vinyl, and I suppose that makes it hard to upload.

Anneke van Giersbergen really shines on this album, more so than on Addicted!, I think. I hope the collaboration continues for a good long time.

Long time Devin fan here, by the way, who owns the entire catalog. I feel a personal connection to this man's music. He's a genius, no doubt about it, and a fellow British Columbian too.
