Format: Paperback
This highly entertaining book tells the epic tale of of the birth of the belief in atoms, evolution, chance, enjoying the here and now, and there being no afterlife. It sounds like the dominant belief system in the modern West, now doesn't it? BUT, it dates to 400 B.C.! It is some 400 years older than Christianity and about 1000 older than Islam! Maybe this is the original belief system of the Western world, which we are now returning to, like a return to our roots... Anyways, the story of how this set of beliefs started, who championed them, how they were kept alive, and then how they resurged to take over our culture starting in more recent times is one of the great tales of humanity! It is shockingly modern how people back 2400 years ago thought and behaved! Or is it shocking that so little has changed in such a long time? I can't recommend this book enough! It helps answer the question of "who we are and where we come from" and it shows that the modern existential, atheist and similar movements are nothing new at all. "There is nothing new under the sun." Very impressive and terrifically interesting!
