Save your money - buy the third edition,
By Parson Birch (Davis, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Epidemiology: with STUDENT CONSULT Online Access, 4e (Gordis, Epidemiology) (Paperback)
I agree with most of the other reviews here and also think this is a good introductory text. If you can get past the bad jokes and frequent references to Christianity, its clearly written and has good examples. However, this 4th edition is a classic example of an author repackaging an old textbook as a new edition and trying to make money off of it. Gordis claims that the 4th edition has many changes, but in reality the chapters are the same and only a few less significant references have been updated. My advice is to save your money and buy the third edition - just as good and much cheaper.

No Access,

Unbeknownst to me when purchasing the kindle edition of this good, basic text, there is no access to the online supplementary material. The result of Elsevier's failure to provide kindle purchasers with p.I.n.s is that we do not get what we pay for.

I bought this thinking I could save some money, take advantage of Kindle's highlighting and search, and be more compact. At this point my experience is so bad I suggest Amazon pull Kindle edition. The first issue I noticed was that many images were blank with the note that copyright for an electronic presentation had not been secured. If it were one or two cartoons from the New Yorker that would be acceptable but epidemiological charts were missing. These rights should either be secured or a paper copy should be mailed along. The next problem was the tables written by the author himself. In one of the chapter questions the cells had moved. Epidemiology is filled with tables and moving one cell over will make calculations incorrect or impossible. Perhaps there are more errors, but I haven't finished my class nor this book. I found an older paperback edition and I must say it is a beautifully presented. The beauty I realize I sacrifice when I buy electronic, but the sad if not incorrect presentation of information makes this a nonstarter. Do not buy.

Excellent book. It contains enough information to give someone like me, a novice, an overview of what epidemiology is and its important concepts. However, it's not overwhelming. The pictures go well with the text, and the occasional cartoon -and other funny bits- make the book even better! Highly recommended!

I bought this book for my coursework as an MPH student. I really enjoyed reading this book because it is a very easy read and the authors incorporate examples that make the concepts easy to learn. I found it to be extremely helpful. My professor did not assign the questions in the book for homework, but after reading a chapter, I always look at the questions to see if I can answer them. I love how this book has the answers in the back so that you check your understanding. Also, the figures presented throughout the chapter are all relevant and help to illustrate the concepts.

This is the best textbook I have found so far for teaching first level epidemiology classes. Although some concepts can be questioned, its clear explanations and step-by-step approach make it priceless for beginners.

Being a novice in the field of Epidemiology, I do not know that I am well versed enough to give an opinion but...I can't say I really like the book. It starts out very interesting but then gets in to all the calculations for epidemiological issues. Unfortunately the explanations are hard to follow with poor analogies. I think in Epidemiology analogies are very important and would be a necessary teaching tool. I do not believe I would have chosen this book for students. Way too many pics of graphs and table without adequate explanation as to what they represent.

This book has good examples in the text and for chapter review. It could stand to have more questions at the end of the chapter
