4.0 out of 5 stars Watch a truly alienated band develop its concept in sound, January 17, 2003
The early material of this band shows both the hardcore punk roots of much of the songwriting, and the aspirations of early black metal to be like classical music from the land of the dead. The result, several degrees of music growing from being simple three-riff bangers to micro-symphonies, is as destructively vile and alienated as any black metal band would hope to be. When all of its blistering guitar rage and throat-ripped vocals are translated in the mind of the listener into changes in pitch and rhythm, what distills from the experience is a passion toward existence turned bleak by its incompatibility with the society of its time. Good release, but fans who want consistency should seek "Thousand Swords" or "The Celtic Winter" instead.

3.0 out of 5 stars Raw and evil black metal, September 27, 2004
This is raw all right as in the musician(s) Rob Darken, can barely play. Capricornus plays drums like he learned to play last week (being a collection of early demos, he probably did). And the sound is awful, distorted and painfully raw and not unlike a transistor radio playing through a bullhorn. The cymbals sound like plates ( I think the drummer only had one) and the drums are monophonic and cardboard sounding. The guitar and vocals have extra layers of dried mud (blood?) surrounding them and I can't tell if a bass was involved or not. Yet this album of early demos has its charms. Its very dark and monochromatically evil in nature and just damn spooky and atmospheric. This is the first thing I've heard by Graveland and although it doesn't thrill me, the musicianship is laughable actually, my curiosity has been peaked and I will look for their other releases. I have to disagree with a statement made by a previous reviewer and say that these demos in no way shape or form comes remotely close to the excellence of Burzum. They are rawer, but not better and nowhere near as emotional. But that's just my opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Raw Pagan Fury !, January 31, 2002
By "midgard16" (Tarrytown, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This cd contains Graveland's early demo material. While the first half of the material suffers from poor drum machine tracks, it does feature a few eerie moments, especially the satanic choir intro to one song and the dark & hypnotic track, "Children of the Moon". The second demo is downright sick, possibly some of the most intense stuff Darken & co. has recorded. It is in the same vein as the "Celtic Winter" material, but more raw and hateful. The burning church/pagan choir intro is simply brilliant. This music is not recommended for fruity goth-kids that wanna hang out in cemetaries, smoking cloves & reading poetry. Those of you, however, that yearn to engage in blood thirsty combat against the Christian hordes should find this cd quite inspiring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Graveland
For a long time I listened to only old-skool Burzum, and since I discovered Graveland I decided it surpasses Burzum and pretty much all other metal. Why? Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars This will make you burn down Vatican!
I've heard comments from others that say darkthrone or burzum is the most raw and dark. Those people are missing the boat. Read more
