I've been playing an sx for about four years and decided to step up a bit . I couldn't afford a thousand dollar bass so after checking out my option in short scale basses I decided on this one(i also got the case which i recomend) The first thing I noticed when it arrived was the kinda flimsy packaging and thought it might be D.O.A. and I would be sending it back. This was not the case though and it was a box in a box type setup so after opening the second box I got to see the "axe". It really looks nicer than the pics, which are awesome, I picked it up and it felt like a real instrument not like my cheaper bass, which was adequate though. I noticed it's definately lighter and feels more balanced. I plugged it in and started playing, nice action at the top and equally nice down by the body where as my old bass was a bit harder to play due to the fact that the neck warped and made the action higher. The neck and strings are much more parallel on this bass than on the prior. The twin volume knobs work and feel sturdy and the tone knob actually changes the tone whereas on my sx it didn't do too much. The case is also nice and you literally have to "squeeze" the bass in it's such a perfect fit.
I played it at 2 live shows friday and saturday in athens, ga and it was much easier to more aound the fretboard and tookless energy so I wasn't as worn out. If you don't have a lot o' dough this is a really well made, beautful, instrument.

Recent Epiphone guitars have been of very high quality and the Allen Woody Bass is no exception. For those bassists who like a Gibson feel, this one rings true. It plays like an old EB-3 and sounds wonderful, getting a rather wide tonal range from the two pickups. Gibson meets Hofner!

Years ago I played a bass guitar...when I was younger and passionate. Well, my hubby has been bugging me to do some bass backup with his acoustic (one of many) so we sought one out that would provide for my very small hands and short reach. We came across this limited edition Allen Woody Rumblekat by Epiphone, and after seeing so many excellent reviews we purchased it. Yes, it came within two days as a Prime item, and it was packaged remarkably well in the beautifully detailed Epiphone cardboard box (it was such a gorgeous design I hated to throw it away) along with their informative paperwork and guarantee. This guitar reeked of beauty, fabulous detail, and perfection in every way. It was carefully delivered as a 'fragile' item to prevent any exterior damage to the packing materials as well. The online pictures do not do it justice. It is ten times more magnificent in your own two hands. This is some of the finest craftsmanship we have ever seen. Not a blemish to be found. Immaculate in every way. We thought we had died and gone to guitar heaven. But wait, it gets better! We bought a Fender "Rumble 75" bass amp and plugged this beauty in. The sound was amazing! It gave us chills as that deep bass boom thundered under our feet and climbed through our bodies. The price on this bass was nearly a giveaway through Amazon compared to what other competitors are asking. I just got through spending 2 hours playing the guitar and it's all I can think about. The passion has been renewed and I can't seem to stop thinking about it sitting all by itself waiting for someone to lovingly stroke it. Ladies, if you have tiny hands (which most men like) and can't make the long reach on a standard bass, I can't recommend the Allen Woody enough. You will most assuredly be happy with it.Read more ›

This bass far exceeded my expectations. Plugged in or just plain acoustically, it sings. Ran through my Beringer system, it flat shakes the pictures in my practice room. Mr. Woody left us way too soon, and his love for vintage instruments served him well.

Allen, your spirit lives on and I thank God for the music you gave to us, and I thank God that you took the time while short on this earth, to get with the fine folks at Epiphone and have this bass built.

Jam on my friend, as you were one of the true greats.

This is a great deal! A wonderful looking instrument that sounds great! A big, warm, and rich bottom end. One of those undervalued gems that you find every now and then.

I own 2 of these.

The first I bought used and it sounds and plays wonderfully.

Given that it is a short scale bass, I decided to buy a second Allen Woody to have as a back-up. I ordered one from an online dealer. The bass arrived and it had no output jack, just a cavity where you would normally plug in the bass. A replacement was sent. On this one the pickups did not work. The dealer had me take it to an Epiphone approved repair outlet. They got the pickups to work but the tone control control was either treble full on or bass full on. Back to the repair outlet where they could not remedy the problem with the tone control after 2 visits. Eventually, the dealer gave me a partial refund on the bass to offset the defective tone control.

I would not recommend buying an Epiphone online. You have to play the unit you buy to make sure everything functions. If it does, you will have a bass you are happy with.
