5.0 out of 5 stars THIS GUITAR IS RIGHT ON GIBSON'S PAR... I'M A POET & JUST FORGET IT, BUY IT!
This guitar even arrives in a nice box, double protected from Musician's Friend with a larger outer box loaded with packing to keep the prize awaiting inside safe. The inside, another Epiphone box by Gibson. Opening it reveals a masterpiece to the eyes, seemless paint job in cherry, easy on the eyes (no, not the girl who packed it at the plant, the guitar!). 3.0 out of 5 stars great guitar for beginners
I found one of these on sale for $99 and snagged it for my nephew. He was a bit too young to start playing at the time but I couldn't pass up the deal. This is a fine guitar for beginning guitarists. The action is not great, but it's comfortable and manageable enough for small fingers looking to build their first callus. It's not too heavy for 9 year old shoulders,...

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS GUITAR IS RIGHT ON GIBSON'S PAR... I'M A POET & JUST FORGET IT, BUY IT!, August 19, 2009
This review is from: Epiphone SG Special Electric Guitar, Cherry (Electronics)
This guitar even arrives in a nice box, double protected from Musician's Friend with a larger outer box loaded with packing to keep the prize awaiting inside safe. The inside, another Epiphone box by Gibson. Opening it reveals a masterpiece to the eyes, seemless paint job in cherry, easy on the eyes (no, not the girl who packed it at the plant, the guitar!). I wanted an SG for a long time, but they were so costly I grazed past it to other models for an intermediate like me getting back in the ranks. This thing looks and feels like the Gibson original, it's light, easy to hold, sits perfectly on your knee, tunes awesome, sounds great, and when I put it through my distortion pedal, I thought I was hearing Metallica... of course, then I woke up. The neck plays fast and the pickup switch gives you the ability to have the full two pickups on for rhythm, the back one on only for lead with a twangier taste, and the front one for a heavier-bassier tone. The full two pickups boring down with some strong bar chords are my favorite. My friend who is an officianado grabbed it and made it sound like a $4,000.00 guitar, then handed it back to me with a sneer and said that he could make anything sound good, but the axe I got for $169 was "okay." In his eyes, that really meant he had to say that so I didn't get a swelled head. Together with a SG model hardshell case from Amazon (off copy) with black velvet style interior, it looks delectable. Buy this one first, then move on to something more expensive, but you don't really have to. Save the money and buy yourself a ticket to the Bahamas, but don't forget to take the SG with you... you may need an Epiphone portable amp though for the beach so people don't even dare kick sand in your face. They may even buy you a Pina Colada, but don't be a dummy and spill it on this masterpiece.

3.0 out of 5 stars great guitar for beginners, March 4, 2010
This review is from: Epiphone SG Special Electric Guitar, Cherry (Electronics)
I found one of these on sale for $99 and snagged it for my nephew. He was a bit too young to start playing at the time but I couldn't pass up the deal. This is a fine guitar for beginning guitarists. The action is not great, but it's comfortable and manageable enough for small fingers looking to build their first callus. It's not too heavy for 9 year old shoulders, either.

I would not recommend this guitar for anyone who has been playing for more than a couple of years. With guitars, you get what you pay for (to an extent) and on this one the price says it all. If you are looking for an excellently crafted guitar with great sustain and control this is not it. However, if you are looking for an instrument that a child can use as a learning tool (without breaking the bank should they decide to not pursue it) then there are worse options on the market.

PROS:
Playability for the price
Acceptable pickups
Lightweight
Comfortable-enough-for-beginners fingerboard
It looks good enough for a beginner to feel the "cool" factor

CON:
Put simply, this IS a cheap guitar. It does not feel or sound like a PRS or Gibson or even a mid-range Epiphone.

5.0 out of 5 stars not exactly like the picture...., November 15, 2011

I got my SG Special today....arrived well-packed and undamaged and set up fine, etc....but I thought I was getting the one without the pick-guard....instead I guess it's the newer model, which has a pick-guard and a "kill-switch"? Whatever, I'll keep this one 'cause it plays great and is an amazing bargain, as usual from Epiphone.....it came in perfect double dropped D, how did they know to do that for me? Anyway, smooth knobs, nice strings....and I like the jack on the top like that where it's safer from drunken abuse.....comfortable guitar for playing on the sofa....buy one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Seller, June 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

The seller sent this guitar out quickly and it was exactly what I expected. The guitar itself was no surprise. I knew that this model was inexpensive and that the hardware on it would be somewhat cheap. The pickup however tested at 12.8 ohms, that's a pretty good output. I gave the guitar a by the book pro setup with the proper gauge and ruler and it works great for me. There are plenty of video tutorials on setting up a neck and tune-o-matic bridge on you tube. I play in an AC/DC tribute band and I get good Angus tone with it, with both my tube and solid state amps. If you don't mind the hardware and care it takes this guitar will work for you on a budget. If pro gear is your thing go with the g-400.

This review is from: Epiphone SG Special Electric Guitar, Cherry (Electronics)
I love this guitar, Its great even without an amp! The coolest thing about it is the open-coil humbucker pickups. They work really well. And im looking for a case, any ideas?

2.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed, October 29, 2009
This review is from: Epiphone SG Special Electric Guitar, Cherry (Electronics)
Went to local place to check out hands-on. I was not impressed at all. The thing just felt cheap. I could not imagine playing it for long. It was not fun to hold and parts looked cheesy.
