vs. coil and maple wood,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Epiphone SG Special Electric Guitar, Ebony (Electronics)
This guitar, when looked at from a technological point of view on produced sound, is ideal for a 'custom' metal sound. People say that the maple assists to the production of a ligther, thinner sound. The rosewood has no actual change to the sound. The humbuckers are more preferred to a coil, because it is responsible for a thicker sound. This combination is ideal if you belong to the metal, preferably death metal, genre.

Great action, heavy sound light guitar...I've played Gibsons and this one is truly an Epiphone for someone seeking quality and value at a fraction of the Gibson price.

I have wanted one of these for a few years, but I hear how Epiphones and Squiers are junky cheapo guitars. That, I am here to say is completely FALSE! This thing came with all the frets dressed nice and smooth, sturdy hardware and really good sounding pickups- clean or distortion. The simple layout of this guitar is what drew me in to begin with (nice, simple 1 volume, 1 tone, one selector switch and a jack). I have heard rumors of the stock tuning heads being crap, but mine have held up extremely well. The neck on this model is a 60s style slim taper, that is somewhat like a low "d" shape, just like the Gibsons. I got all black and added chrome knobs, and it is my handy go to guitar for practicing, as well as trying out new stuff. Plays and sounds great through my tube amp as well as my solid state with effects. Buy this guitar, you won't be disappointed.

I didn't purchase this guitar on Amazon, but I own it, and it's my primary playing guitar. Even with everything stock, it sounds and plays great, and holds its tune well. The bueaty of this guitar is its price. For less than $200, you can have an SG styled guitar that sounds and plays great. Plus, due to the low price and bolt-on neck, it's a great project guitar. Nobody wants to drill on a $2000 authentic Gibson SG Standard, but drilling and soldering with this $170 beauty is no sweat. I personally modified mine for a pickguard, swapped out the pickups, added a killswitch, and upgraded all the wiring on it, not to mention setting up the action and intonation just right. With a fairly inexpensive upgrade in hardware, this can easily rival a true SG for a lot less money. All in all, a great purchase, for beginner guitarists particularly, but also for older, more skilled players. Plus, it looks pretty sweet.

BETTER than my Gibson SG,
By Avid Eclectic (Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews

I had always regretted selling my 1970 Gibson SG, so when I came across a 2007 Epiphone SG Special in a pawn shop, I couldn't resist going in and trying it out. Man, was I impressed! The things I'd loved about my Gibson were all there: thin neck, low action, great sound, and of course the fabulous "horns" shape. What amazed me (so much that I went back and bought it the next day) was that the Epi actually beat the Gibson in a couple of ways. For one thing, the Epi is much better balanced. While the Gibson was neck-heavy, the Epi stays nicely in place. (I recommend strap locks for any guitar, but without them the Gibson would have been on the floor.) The high E string on the Gibson was a little too close to the edge of the neck (which would have required a nut replacement, so I just lived with it). No such issue with the Epi; everything's in the right place. I can't comment on the factory setup because I bought both my guitars used. There's some buzz on the bottom 3 strings of the Epi, so I'm going to have it set up professionally; but I'd expect to do the same with any used guitar (and indeed did so with the Gibson, which had a similar string buzz when I got it). As for the tuning, the Epi frets true all the way up; and it actually stays in tune better than the Gibson did. Much of the time, it's better to buy a more expensive instrument used than spend an equal or lesser amount on a cheaper new one. However, the Epiphone SG defies this stereotype. It not only beats all the other low-priced guitars by miles, it will hold its own against the best!

It's Pretty Simple: Good Deal for a Good Guitar,
This review is from: Epiphone SG Special Electric Guitar, Ebony (Electronics)
I was originally looking around for a beater, a rough, cheap guitar have fun with. Then I came across the Epiphone SG Special, which is supposed to be a lower tier SG. I say "supposed to" because this thing is actually built really well, is light and the action on it feels great. I abandoned my hunt for a beater, because this is a cheap guitar that doesn't look cheap, feel cheap or play cheap. It's simply a good deal for anyone who is a novice player or just wants to get a well made guitar for a value. I must say I didn't find mine on Amazon, but the price is still a good value on this listing.

WHOEVER SAID THIS THING IS GOOD FOR METAL HAD IT NAILED, BUT IT'S ALSO GREAT FOR BLUES AND HARD ROCK. THE SOUND IS AMAZING PLUGGED OR UNPLUGGED, THE BOARD IS EASY TO SLIDE ALL OVER AND THE BODY. IT'S LIGHT AND FOR A LEFTY PLAYING A RIGHTY THE STRAP KNOBS ARE PLACED PERFECTLY (ONE ON THE BACK, ONE ON THE BOTTOM.) BUY THIS THING YOU'LL REGRET IT IF YOU DON'T.I WAS GOING TO BUY THE SG-400 GOTH SERIES, BUT THEN I SAW THIS.

At $169.00, I was skeptical about this guitar, but I bought one anyway, figuring I could always return it-(Amazon's return policy and customer service ROCKS!). I've had mine for about 3 weeks now, and I'm very happy I did. The guitar arrived 3(!) days after I ordered it, and was quite securely packed, in the original carton, which was inside another box, and thoroughly padded and protected. I'm kinda crazy when I buy something online, so I inspected it, from strap button to peghead, and the finish was flawless. Nice 'action' setup. Smooth pots. Next step- tuning. It was only off tune slightly. Plug it in and play- THIS AXE ROCKS! Lots of FAT low-mids, and low end as well, with pretty clear highs for stock generic pickups. This guitar has massive tone, great for rock/metal, the neck's REALLY fast, and, with a pickup swap down the road, (I'm also kinda tone crazy), this is my go-to guitar.I play a lot of metal/rock/classic rock, and I'll always have a soft spot for my (Squire)Strat, but this is my main axe now. If you DO buy one of these fine specimens, I'd suggest an immediate string change- I put a set of Ernie Ball Slinkys (10-46) on mine, and it really brought it to life. (Most low-to-mid end guitars are shipped with the cheapest bulk strings available, so I expected this). This bad boy can run with guitars 3-4 times it's price. In short- Yeah, I'd DEF reccomend this beauty to friends. (And, at this price, I may buy the red one too, just to have a de-tuned/alt tuned option). Buy it- you won't regret it... You know you want to... |
