Unconventional, unflinching, and undeniably engaging, this coming-of-age story is about a provincial young woman who follows her heart--and a beautiful male impersonator--to London. It's also a candid depiction of lesbian love in Victorian England.

What a conundrum! In all seriousness, this wonderful 3-part series to come from Britain is a thoroughly entertaining journey. We follow Nancy Astly, an ordinary oyster girl living with her family in the early 1900s. Her seaside village is ordinary, her life is ordinary, though deep down she isn't fully content with it. One day her family gets a chance to go to the big city and see a variety act at the theater. It is there for the first time Nancy sees Kitty Butler - a female performer, who dresses on stage as a male and sings mens songs to women. She falls instantly and in no time is on the road with Kitty. We follow the highs and lows for Nan; her loves, her losses. Does she finally end with the true love she desires?
The costumes and scenery are absolutely amazing. When watching, the viewer feels transported instantly to 1900s England and can almost smell the coal and soot in the air. The chemistry between the actors is fantastic no matter the pairing. The theater scenes with singing and dancing for me were especially fun and anyone who loves historical accuracy would enjoy this film. Date night? Parts one and three, possibly. Part two, I'd venture to suggest no, though it is important to the story as a whole. Overall, this set is worth a watch at least a few times so I'd suggest buying it. Pop some corn, grab a soda, pass the remote and tuck in. It's gonna be awhile :)

A brief appearance by Benedict Cumberbatch in the first episode lured me to watch this BBC miniseries from 2002. It's a colorful coming-of-age story set in the lesbian subculture of Victorian London, featuring strong performances from Rachael Stirling, the lead, and Anna Chancellor as a wealthy, dominant lesbian with a taste for dildos and exhibitionism, or possibly voyeurism as it's her lover she exhibits. Can young Nancy find true love and stability in the love of a good woman? She can try, and she has a lot of racy adventures along the way. Sexy but ultimately sweet, a caramel bonbon with pink salt on top.

There is so much I could say about this 3-part drama. I appreciated the historical setting and the detail supplied concerning the culture of being a lesbian during this time period. The acting was superb and the settings realistic. I was drawn into the relationship between the two major actors, and I watched with eagerness to see how the story would play out. This was a stellar production. I have watched scores of lesbian movies and I have had my favorites along the way. "Tipping the Velvet" is my new favorite, and I have purchased this so I can watch it again and again. If you like historical fiction and lesbian movies, you won't be disappointed with this. I am looking forward to reading the book.

I love Sarah Waters writing and Shea Media did her proud with the production of Tipping the Velvet. I wanted it downloaded to my Kindle so I can watch it any time I want to. Thanks Amazon for offering it for download.
