5.0 out of 5 stars Love Korean historicals, November 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Emperor of the Sea Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
I never liked foreign movies with subtitles because I didn't like having to read subtitles. But, I've become a Korean historical drama lover as their stories are wonderful. Being a screenwriter myself I'm intrigued by all the twists and turns and the relationships between the protagonist and antagonist. And although Korean movies, unlike Western movies, tend to have sad endings which can be frustrating to Western viewers, its still enjoyable. Robert McKee, one of the top screenwriting teachers in the world says in his book that if screenwriters want to learn "story" they need to look at Asian movies because they do story best. Korea is now recognized as the Hollywood of Asia making more money than American movies, even Avatar. I can see why. The stunt work, martial arts scenes, costumes, settings, locations, and cinematography are fantastic. Sometimes, especially in this one, the story line does become far fetched as I have an irritating habit of attention to detail. However, the overall picture is entertaining. This was Song Il Kuk's breakout role and it is easy to see why. Even as the bad guy, he stands out. I highly recommend this series if you are a Korean drama fan, even if you're not.
