4.0 out of 5 stars Smooth and sincere, October 27, 2004

This review is from: Episode of Sparrows (Audio CD)
Don't let the term Indy scares you.

There's no emo, no whinning, no crying (Screw you Dashboooooh)in The Paperbacks music. Doug McLean is a talented lyricist, backed up by a great band. You get that Weakerthans vibe here and there, but nothing too evident. You don't feel like you listen to a rip-off band! Not at all.

Episode of Sparrows proposes a nice mix between slow and faster songs, depending on the mood you're in. But one thing goes for every single song: Doug really means his lyrics. I heard that he has difficulty about singing other people's music. Maybe it wouldn't be done with as much sincerity. Superb lyrics, sung with a beautiful and sincere voice.

A bad point concerning this cd is the recording, which would be called 'average', but I'd have loved a more developped sound. But since it's their first LP released on an indy label, I understand that the high resolution sound can't be got on your first album. Another tiny bad point: some songs go on for too long. Suffer This Like a Dream or Letters Vs Numbers don't deserve 6 mins and more. Maybe they'll grow on me later, and I'll feel them more complete than too long.

Anyway, Episode of Sparrowns is pleasant, smooth, sincere...The Paperbacks give a solid and nice debut album. Give it a try. (Go check for songs If I Make It Through This Winter, An Episode Of Sparrows and Plans In Advance).
