5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent commentary for the serious student of Hebrews
When studying the Epistle to the Hebrews, one may get lost in its beauty. But when one begins to study it in the Greek, they may get lost in the author's style, vocabulary, use of the Old Testament, and many other things. Thankfully, Paul Ellingworth has written a magisterial commentary that helps get the reader through the maze that is Hebrews. The introduction is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Fine review, but bias is very evident
Mr. Ellingworth definitely knows his Greek. My desire, however, was to find a commentary of the Greek that was more objective, providing the possible translations and the contextual supports/detractions for each. Mr. Ellingworth's bias towards a dispensation theology is extremely evident and is the premise of his work rather than a supported conclusion. Perhaps this is...

The introduction is excellent, and the commentary is superb! Ellingworth leaves no stone unturned, and for a Greek student like myself, this is priceless. If you could get one commentary on Hebrews, this may be just that one (it is hard to decide between William Lane and Ellingworth).

5.0 out of 5 stars Ellingworth's Hebrews, March 4, 2012

This review is from: The Epistle to the Hebrews (New International Greek Testament Com (Eerdmans)) (Hardcover)
Paul Ellingworth's Hebrews commentary in the NIGTC series proves to be one of the best in the series. Those serious about understanding Hebrews should add this to their libraries, as I have.

Perhaps this is necessary, but this bias does not just bleed into his commentary, it pours all over it. Ultimately and understandably, the author's bias influences the weight he gives other possible translations and I could not be sure how much of this bias produced an anachronistic interpretation. Overall it is a well-presented exegesis, yet could have been better if Mr. Ellingworth had softened his predilection towards his adopted theological schema.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scholarly and rich, July 17, 2013

This review is from: The Epistle to the Hebrews (New International Greek Testament Com (Eerdmans)) (Hardcover)
Ellingworth's Hebrews commentary has to go on the short list of best commentaries on this crucial book. This is not for the casual layperson, but theology students, scholars and pastors who like deep, technical material from which to work. A knowledge of Greek is helpful as with most in the NIGTC series. If you are a serious student of Hebrews, this is one you should have on your shelf.

Ellingworth's effort deserves to be placed along Beale's Revelation commentary as two of the NIGTC's standouts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary excellence in the development of the understanding of Hebrews., December 7, 2014

This review is from: The Epistle to the Hebrews (New International Greek Testament Com (Eerdmans)) (Hardcover)
Shows the continuation of the development of the understanding of the book of Hebrews. Interacts with recent literature yet advances the body of writing on the book. Somewhat technical but certainly within the grasp of serious students of the New Testament.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hebrews is so rich, May 12, 2007

In my opinion, this is simply the best commentary on the Epistle to the Hebrews. I have gleaned countless additional understandings and a better overall understanding of the interrelation of the Old and New covenants. I would consider this book a must read for anyone studying Hebrews as part of a group or for individual edification. The only time I would recommend a 'better' commentary is if you know the Hebrew language and can benefit from:

I choose this because it was recommended by a serious student of the Bible. It covers exegetical nuance substantively with the focus on Hebrews.

I liked other books in the series better. This one was a disappointment. I like the book of Hebrews but not this commentary.
