rouse has been called the unsung hero (columbia LP/CD). well its time to sing his praises!!! this CD is a gem. to hear monk tunes improvised on successfully, is an amazing accomplishment. the music: an absolute joy to listen to. rouse is perfect as usual...and the piano (george cables) is as good as anything i heard in a long time (and i listen). we first listened in the car. i thought WOW who's on piano? just then my wife turned and asked who's playing piano. i spent 2 or 3 times a week at the 5 spot when monk was there. griffin, 'trane, rollins, and then rouse. all of them would love this CD!.go listen!!!!

This is a wonderful concert featuring Charlie Rouse, Monk's main sax player for many years, with added poignance because Charlie died of cancer not long afterward. All the performances are excellent, a great concert altogether. This is absolutely first-rate jazz.
