Best episode of Dollhouse yet,
By
This review is from: Dollhouse Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
If you don't want spoilers, do not watch this episode until you've seen "Man on the Street", "A Spy in the House of Love", "Briar Rose" and "Omega" at the very least. Set 10 years in the future in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, this episode is like nothing that you've seen before on Dollhouse. This episode is loaded with spoilers for a long time to come. A group of "actuals" as those who have not been imprinted are referred to discover the Dollhouse while searching for a place to hide from individuals who have been imprinted with the desire to kill all who are not and to avoid the "tech" that has led to the destruction of humanity.
The cast of this episode is very regular light due to a limited budget, however it does not harm this episode at all. It features Felicia Day (The Guild, Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog), Zack Ward (A Christmas Story, Titus), Adair Tishler (Heroes), and the return of Reed Diamond. Amy Acker is the most present regular. The rest of the cast regulars are featured in numerous flashbacks and flashforwards. I don't want to give anything away so I'll wrap this up, but it is worth purchasing the dvds just for this episode alone or downloading the whole season, as this episode improves upon all the previous episodes. Although it is shot in video rather than on film, it really adds depth to the episode. It ends with the song "Remains" written and performed by Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen (who also wrote this episode) which can be found here: [...] If I had been able to give it more than five stars I would've. It is my hope that either Fox airs this episode before the season 2 premier, or that everyone who doesn't purchase the dvds comes here to watch this episode.

NO SPOILERS!
When you watch this episode, realize that it had to be created on a SHOESTRING budget. Then, your jaw just might drop in amazement at the amount of good storytelling done. After watching this last night, I have to admit what I've long suspected -- Eliza Dushku is holding the series back. The few scenes that she's in fall flat here. The supporting cast are all much stronger actors, even the much-maligned and annoying 'Topher. Just when I was starting to write him off as the Jar-Jar of the Dollhouse, his scenes are among the most compelling in the episode. Amy Acker as Whiskey turns in her best performance since "Angel's" Iliriya. After remaining lukewarm about "Dollhouse" thru most of the season last year (even though there were occasional moments of brilliance), I find myself impatiently looking forward to Season Two.

Spoiler Warning!!!
I just recently saw this episode and I was blown away. The plot was creative and gripping, with some familiar faces blended with new ones. The episode is basically foreshadowing what COULD happen if the big wigs that run the Dollhouse have their way. One problem however was the fact that it was all wrapped up in about 54 minutes, Joss and company could have easily stretched this into a mini-series during hiatus to keep Dollhouse fresh in peoples minds. I guess they didnt do this because of the doubt of renewal..but still would have been nice. There were way more questions than answers which really upset me as I am someone who hates not knowing whats to come. Why did Boyd have to leave in secret? Why was Whiskeys' face fixed and by whom? What happened to Victor, Sierra, Adelle, Topher, Echo, and Ballard? Did they die? Are they in Safe Haven? Where is Safe Haven? They climbed to the roof of the building, why? What is the cure? They mentioned Alpha, was he caught? Why did Topher break down? Didn't Adelle order Laurence Dominic's hard drive to be lost in the archives? I hate not knowing!!

This is the worst tripe I have ever seen in my LIFE! Stoopid premise, horrible acting, moronic episodes.
Did Joss think this crap up in rehab or something? How else do you go from "Firefly" (a FANTASTIC series!!) to this nonsense? |
