4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Debut, February 19, 2008
By
This review is from: Epochs (Audio CD)
The Epochs are possibly the best band to come out in 2008. They bring a fresh, original sound, electronic undertones, and pop sensibility.

The beat and vibaphone on "opposite sides" is incredibly addictive and catchy - even if the high pitches of the vocalist takes a little getting used to.

"Mouths to Feed" is another standout track that also implements the xylophone sound with an electronic beat. It really works for them.

The album also has some fun summery, playful tunes like "Love Complete"

all in all, this is an outstanding debut album by a band to watch out for. I gave it 4 stars because I think it lacks the consistency of a 5 star album, but they definitely have 5 star sound and potential. Check these guys out.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best album I've heard in years!!!, July 13, 2011
This review is from: Epochs (Audio CD)
It's been way too long since I've heard an album that was this good. I can just sit back, close my eyes and listen to their smooth sounds for hours. Listen to "Opposite Sides" once and you'll be hooked, just like me. You have to get this Album!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Old school vocals collide with modern electronics (in a good way), May 12, 2011

This review is from: Epochs (Audio CD)
Whirl together the lockstep rhythms and cool electronics of modern dance music and the more natural, organic vocals of old school soul, plus various other flourishes and tricks, and you end up with the Epochs. The CD artwork is bright and brash, paint sloshed across a canvas, dripping and running together, the work of a frenzied artist. That artwork sums up the Epoch's music, too--it is bright and busy; songs overlay one another as endings fade to and beginnings emerge; and the whole CD pulses with energy.

"Stand Up and Be Counted," "Picture of the Sun," and "Opposite Sides" showcase the clear-cut pop sensibilities, and the vocals and the instruments blend into a groove that will get into your head and backbone. Fronted by a couple of brothers, Hays and Ryan Holladay who share vocals and play all manner of instruments, the Epochs might seem a two-man army, but the rhythm section of a cat named Kotchy (that's the name he uses) on drums and percussion along with a great bass player, Kevin Smith, are essential here.

As far as who wrote what, who plays what, or any information at all about the band or songs, well, it is no doubt under all that paint somewhere. Give this a listen but turn it up.
