Every time I've bought a computer printer in years past, I've agonized about whether to go with Epson or HP (I never really considered Brother, Canon or Lexmark, for reasons shrouded in the mists of time). Both Epson and HP have pretty good reputations for performance and reliability. In my experience, both brands' printers make good-quality prints. Both companies have printers with comparable features for similar prices. Ink usage and replacement cartridge prices are pretty much a wash. Having said that, I've been looking to replace two old printers recently. One is an HP LaserJet 4 with a damaged drum. It would cost far more to fix than it's worth (plus the toner cartridges are obscenely expensive). The other is an HP DeskJet 1120C. It still works, but I don't need its 11"-x-17" paper size capability, and it is glacially, unbearably slow.

Thanks to Amazon's Vine program, I have now not only replaced my old printers, but I've done so in a way that I hope potential buyers will find useful. I chose BOTH an Epson XP-610 and an HP Envy 5530 to review. Thus I can compare their features and performance, which hopefully will be of interest to anyone looking at buying a new all-in-one. I think these units offer similar performance and features at a similar price point, and probably attract the same type of user. So here goes...

SETUP

There's not really much difference between setting up the two. Both come packaged in sturdy, colorful, tight-fitting boxes with lots of blue tape holding things in place and pieces of cardboard, foam or plastic wedged here and there in their innards to prevent the moving parts from moving during transport.

The Epson XP-610 is a great all-in-one wireless printer. The more I use it, the more impressed I am with its features and quality. If this isn't the best $100 printer on the market, I'd like to see the one that is.

PROs
------------------------
+ The easiest-to-use printer I've ever used
+ Two paper trays, one for photo paper, one for plain paper, with auto-select
+ Works with iPhone/iPad
+ High quality prints
+ Double-sided printing

CONs
------------------------
- Obnoxious adware built into the drivers

SETUP
------------------------
There were two parts to setting up this printer. First, I installed the Epson drivers onto my Windows laptop by downloading them from Epson.com and running the installer. Simple.

After installing the drivers, I plugged the printer into my computer and was asked if I'd like to use the printer with my wireless network. I said 'yes', entered my wifi password, and I was done. I disconnected the printer cable from my laptop but was still able to print. Even more simple!!

Once the printer was on my wireless network, it automatically showed up as a printer on my iPhone; I didn't have to do any other setup and I was able to print both pictures and emails right off my phone. Very impressive.

Now on to one negative: during the driver installation I was prompted to install several "extra" packages from Epson, including the "Ask" toolbar/search engine for my web browser. I couldn't believe Epson was trying to install invasive adware on my computer for a product that actually cost money. I carefully declined all of the adware. But surprise, two hours later I open my web browser and it informed me that the "Ask toolbar successfully installed". WHAT????

I have been a loyal HP printer fan since 1996, always owning a photo capable desk printer. I do also own a large format Epson photo printer for 'good stuff', but like an every day AIO printer that can handle all type of projects, quick 4 x 6 prints, etc.; not to mention my need for a good scanner for old photos and such. And HP has always lived up to my expectations.

Recently my 4 year old HP Photosmart all-in-one died and the only replacement brand I even considered was HP, especially given the fact that I have quite the surplus of various HP paper products, photo papers and project paper. Without hesitating, I purchase their latest Photosmart All-in-One and expected the same quality results as the unit it was replacing. I was greatly disappointed, the photos it produced were muddy, lacking vibrancy and contrast. The scanner was worse and for the first time ever, I was fed up with HP products and would not consider another one. I also couldn't help but notice that quality of the latest offerings had declined and seemed cheap and flimsy. The newest offerings from HP also lost a feature that I rely on, the ability to make custom size paper for various projects. I had to return the HP unit and look at what else was out there.

As I am so happy with my Epson R1900 printer, I decided to seriously look at Epson's offerings. Usually I go for the higher priced units, thinking you get what you pay for. However, I liked this unit, and figured I would give it a try before going into a higher price range.

My first 4 x 6 print from this printer was amazing. Simply beautiful. I scanned a couple of photos and was even more impressed. I like that it has two paper trays, although it doesn't hold a lot of paper. That I can live with.
