4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the price!
If you are looking to break into the 1080p projector territory, this is an excellent projector! I've had the chance to use my 6100 now for a few weeks, and it definitely doesn't disappoint. Image quality is fantastic, and the colors are great too (when configured correctly). I've been using mine with the HDMI output of a Harman Kardon AVR-254 7x50W 7.1-Channel Home...

3.0 out of 5 stars Watch for HDMI compatibility issues!!
Well, I upgraded from a Panasonix AX200U, a 720p projector. The setup was no problem, even though the wheels to shift the picture can not be easily adjusted - the vertical one needed to be set just a little bit to the right in my set up and automatically jumped back to the middle position. Pretty poor design, but I finally got it as needed.

The picture is...

If you are looking to break into the 1080p projector territory, this is an excellent projector! I've had the chance to use my 6100 now for a few weeks, and it definitely doesn't disappoint. Image quality is fantastic, and the colors are great too (when configured correctly). I've been using mine with the HDMI output of a Harman Kardon AVR-254 7x50W 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver with HDMI 1.3a Repeater.

Pros:

* This sucker is BRIGHT. I am amazed at how nice it looks even with ambient light.
* Minimal screen door, as should be expected for a 1080p projector.
* The expanded color mode is beautiful, and works quite well.
* Contrast ratio is good, but don't believe the 18000:1. It is still remarkably good for a <$2000 projector, and blows others that I've seen out of the water. But I have seen a lot of compression-artifact banding on Bluray sources -- you need a good video source to achieve good results.

Cons:

* I haven't figured out why yet, but sometimes the projector loses focus. It could be vibrations from traffic nearby, kids playing upstairs, or the startup sequence, but the focus definitely needs to be tweaked from time to time. If you plan to mount your projector where it is not easily accessible, I would go so far as to suggest a different projector.
* If you have an HDMI source, it doesn't seem to allow you to change the aspect ratio and zoom options. This gets kind of annoying when watching a letterboxed 4:3 source, because you can't zoom in on the smaller image frame -- you are stuck with the combined letterboxing and pillarboxing.
* The lens shift feature is excellent, but beware the limitations -- you can't shift fully in all directions. When shifting far to the left or right, you can't also shift fully up or down. And if you are shifting near to the center point, it becomes difficult to tweak the shift because it wants to lock in on the center point.
* A number of the color mode seem useless and blown out in the out-of-the-box settings. I haven't adjusted much to try out the other settings....

All in all, I'm incredibly happy, as I couldn't spend more on a higher-end projector, and this gave me almost everything I wanted. For a five star home theater rating, you'll probably need to spend at least $1000 more...

This projector is Awesome. It replaced a Sharp projector that I was in love with for 3 years, and this blows it out of the water... Dual HDMI inputs, razor sharp resolution, EXTREMELY bright if you want it to be means daytime viewing is no problem.

This thing is BIG and a bit of a beast, but that just makes me feel even more that I got what I paid for. Happy camper here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great projector at a good price., October 1, 2009

I have about a month of experience with the Epson 6100, and I'm thrilled. It replaces an Infocus 4805 that is about five years old. The 4805 has 2800 hours on the lamp, and the light tunnel is faulty causing a yellow smear down the left side of the screen. I had a few bucks set aside for a new projector, and between the great reviews I read, the long lamp life, and the $100 and spare lamp rebate, I pulled the trigger.

I opted for free shipping, and thank you Amazon, I got delivery in three days. The first impression was how huge this thing is. It's twice the size of the 4805. In fact, it's about as big as my Pioneer Elite receiver. It didn't fit in the tight little space next to the couch the old projector occupied. I knew I'd need a ceiling mount, but for the time being I jury rigged a platform. My only high resolution source is a Fios HD box. The HD image looked good through the 480P Infocus, but I was blown away by the bright, sharp, colorful image the 6100 produced right out of the box. I'm using analog component cables for now. Sports like baseball, football and the U.S. Open tennis are spectacular. Movies on standard definition DVDs are exceptional. I have a Marantz DV 6400 multi-player which is a very nice machine. I can't wait to see what Blu-ray looks like through the 6100.

I got the Vantage Point ceiling mount which makes a big difference. The mount has a six inch extension that works well on my sloped Cape Cod ceiling. It's a solidly built mount the supports this big guy very well. The 6100 has great placement flexibility with it's up and down, and right to left lens shift. The image fills my 72" wide screen from about ten feet, and can go much bigger. I changed the settings to those recommended by one of the reviews I read, which cut down the brightness a bit, and warmed the colors. This is a very impressive machine for a reasonable price. With the spare lamp, I hope to have it well into my golden years. If I could give it ten stars I would.

This box rocks. Having a great time watching movies on the big screen at home. No need to talk in inches anymore, talk in feet now. I don't have anything to play 1080p yet but even 720p is simply awesome. The adjustable lens assembly is another great feature to be able to keep it in a corner of the room. Its a bit bulky though.

With no adjustments, this projector throws beautiful 8' wide images onto my blank white wall. I set it up on an elevated shelf and have had no problems with it. Adjusting image size, position, and focus were easy and I haven't touched it since. Colors are vivid and sharp, especially with Blu-ray disks. Other than a little more contrast and some loss of tonal subtlety, it's like being in a movie theater. This is also one of the most flexible projectors in zoom range and ability to move the picture horizontally or vertically away from center -- check the specs, especially if you need the positioning flexibility; some projectors constrain you to a much smaller range.

I bought this projector to replace a Sharp LCD with standard resolution. This projector is smaller and much quieter. It has an interesting set of adjustment wheels that allow you to adjust the image to the screen with ease. There is no need for a keystone adjustment as this projector corrects for it automatically. It gives you a variety of choices for video connections, but it performs extremely well using the HDMI connection. It has good brightness, even in a partially lit room and has rich colors and good blacks in a darkened room. It provides extremely sharp 1080p images; I am using it with an 8 feet wide screen at a distance of about 20 feet and it has room to throw a bigger image. If you are looking for an "affordable" full 1080p projector with good features, this is the one you should buy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Watch for HDMI compatibility issues!!, February 26, 2010

The picture is great, but I honestly can not see a huge difference to the 720p Panasonix projector. It is bright enough to get a decent picture during the day, the blacks though looked a bit washed out, actually worse than on the 720 projector.

The reason for the bad rating though is that the picture through the HDMI signal could not be displayed. I have a 1.5 years old Pioneer VSX-1017 TXV 7.1 receiver which (supposedly) support HDMI 1.3. All I got on the projector though was that the signal was not allowed to be displayed on the projector. What a crap!! I called the Epson hotline (even though India based, it was pretty good) and the response was "We know that there are compatibility issues with some projectors. Bad luck." Nothing in regards to if/when/how this would be fixed, no excuse for selling such a piece of junk. As a workaround I hooked it up to a switch vs. using the receiver, but that is not going to be the long term solution. This thing goes back.

I still do recommend buying this projector - nut check if it will work with your receiver.

Edit: I realized ít is not really Epson's fault, but Pioneer sells "1080p" receivers that do not allow 1080p passthrough and because of that and the idiotic copy protection mechanisms, will not work with this projector. I bought a HDMI switch and now everythings seems fine. Picture quality is good.

If you are not into aesthetics, but into functionality and into looking for good bang for your buck...This Is It....Look no further...the only thing is the manual adjustemt for the lens. Other than that, PERFECT for our needs!

I have had it for almost two years, and I utilize it almost daily, and more often than my 52" LCD display....The last NBA game we watched with the house full, projected against the wall at 10' high...HD without a hitch!!!!

The only other negative, now everyone wants to watch games at my place....but I am working on it...!

Great purchase....I am due for a new light bulb...that tells you how much we use it!!!!

This review is from: Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 6100 1080p 3LCD Home Theater Projector (Electronics)
I recently bought the Epson 6100 as a Manufacturers Refurbished product. While it was purchased through Visual Apex, an Amazon storefront, the projector was shipped direct from the Epson factory. The projector arrived in mint condition and the lamp was brand new ( verified with Epson).
Setting up was a breeze. I am using a throw distance of 13 1/2' with a 100" diagonal 16:9 ratio screen. With its lens shift capabilities and picture zoom I had no problem positioning the projector.
Using a 1080p hd signal the picture was fantastic right out of the box. As with all projectors, this works best in a darkened room but with its high lumen output, it still provides a fine picture with ambient light. If you have a room with full control over the ambient light, the picture will be as good or better than your local movie theatre.
The refurbished Epson 6100 is a steal at under $1000.
