Good little printer - can be a little loud ! Print cartridges easy to find on-line and a lot cheaper !

I don't write reviews but for the first week of using this printer I hated it. Constantly had to clean the head and waste ink. Lo and Behold I sat down and read the manual for this printer. For years I have used printers that I simply turned off with a master computer switch. Epson is different. You must turn the printer off with it's own power switch. Otherwise the heads do not charge properly. This took care of all the complaints I had with this printer. The C42UX is the best inexpensive printer I have ever used. Just remember, from day one that you use the printer, turn the thing off with it's own power switch. All Epson Ink Jet printers sound loud and clunkey. Thats the way they are made. You find me a better printer for the money and I will buy it.

Look, this is a cheap printer and you get what you pay for. Personally, I've used it to print resumes, sheet music and papers for school. It's been fine for all of the above. I've never tried to print a photo on it but I wouldn't waste my time doing that anyway. Since you hopefully didn't pay more than $40 for this thing, you shouldn't expect photo quality. It has lasted me 2 years now, and it prints almost as well today as it did when I got it. It's certainly nothing special, but based on all the "one star" reviews below, you would think this thing didn't even work.

So yes, it's slow, uses ink too quickly and doesn't print in high resolution. But if you want to save money-- and aren't printing photos or running a home business-- this thing will work fine.

Big mistake. Yes, like everyone else has already said, it's slow (12 ppm... sure I seriously doubt it. It takes 20-30 seconds to print a full page of text with this piece of junk), noisy and the ink is a serious problem. Not many stores carry the ink in the first place and in the second place, the ink runs out so fast you will find yourself constantly having to buy new ink. AND if you you run out of one type of ink you cannot print at all. At times when I've simply wanted to print in color, because I had no black ink everytime I started a print job this really obnoxious prompt would keep popping up asking me to visit the epson homepage to order ink. This is great for epson because you are forced to buy more ink but very bad for the user. It is a problem you too will become well familiar with if you waste a cent on this printer. You may think you're getting a good deal but most of your money will go down the drain because of the ink cost. Another thing, the cartridges must be very leaky because the inside of the printer is stained with a nice thick film of black ink that stains all my your documents whenever I print. What's more, I must costantly clean and align the printer head otherwise anything and everything I print out in will be riddled with lines of faded text.
All of this is not to say that epson creates bad printers. In fact all of my past epson printers were excellent.

It gets the job done. but the picture is not great.

This printer is excellent for printing my digital photoraphs on glossy photo papers. Given the 100$ + prices for other photo printers, this printer is really a steal. Had no problems whatsoever with this printer so far.

This one came free with Powerbook purchase, guess thats the only way Epson get to sell their very expensive ink!!

Too many problems to list...

Just got rid of my other Epson (820) and got a Canon, same fate awaits this one.

If it were free I would refuse it, leave it on the shelf for someone else to dispose of.....

This is without a doubt the worst printer ever made.It clogs up easily after just printing a few pages,,and the results are black lines,and black dots.Epson tech support says you need to clean the nozzle.It wastes a lot of ink to clear up the problem,and it would not take too long before the problem comes back.Epson has replaced this printer for me three times.The problems are the same from unit to unit.It uses up black ink like crazy during normal use,making it really one of the most expensive inks around based on the small cartridge size.It is noisy,and slow.I can live with that,but the quality of the printing is the pits.I am going to toss this printer out soon.No more Epson products for me.The model should be more accurately labeled the C-42 SUX

This thing has given us problems from the start and of course with no help from their tech support. It's so erratic that it won't print try after try but if you shut it off for a few days it might work after that.

I thought I was getting a great deal because I got this new for under $30 after a rebate. Boy was I wrong.

The black ink lasted me about two months of moderate use, compared to a year of heavy use in my old Xerox multifunction. This means you will be buying lots of ink for this. The cartridges are cheaper than, say, HP cartridges, but as far as I can tell that's because they have 1/2 the ink.

It's also very slow, even when printing in black-only.

It's very noisy and irritating in true Epson style.

And, to top it off, the print quality is very mediocre. You can tell at first glance that the output was from a cheap inkjet.

I'm replacing this as soon as I can with a better printer, probably another Multifunction, and probably not from Epson, just to spite them.
