5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent printer for the price!
I bought this printer as a color replacement for my black and white LaserJet. I was attracted by the 2880dpi resolution & claims of photo quality prints and laser-like black text. I was not disappointed. When used with quality inkjet paper, the printer performs as promised. Photographic results are amazing when glossy paper is used. These things are not so outstanding...

1.0 out of 5 stars Great print quality, poor product quality
At the begining you have to think, why other printers can't print this good? believe me, few printers in this price range can match the output quality of the 880. The problem came when the ink ran out, although the printer monitor shows some ink in the tanks, there is almost no output in the print head, after many print head cleanings, i decided to change the cartridges,...

These things are not so outstanding in the higher end printer market, but considering the slim price tag, this printer is extraordinary. Added features that I found useful are ink level monitoring and print area expansion. The USB connection option is very convenient as well. If you decide to purchase this printer, be sure to pick up a cable, as one is NOT included.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great printer, amazing price, February 23, 2001
This review is from: Epson Stylus 880 Color InkJet Printer (Office Product)
Any computers or periphials are usually as good as their cost. You get what you pay for... except in this case. There is absolutely NO printer that prints this good at such a low price. The quality on glossy paper is identical to a photo. I bought a digital cam, and thanks to the Stylus 880, I can use it to produce perfect photos. I never have to buy film again, only glossy paper and ink occasionaly, which will not cost nearly as much as film and developement. It is not just the quality that wowed me, though, it was the speed also. If you are just printing a paper or anything with text only, the 880 will spit it out in about 5 seconds. A 5 X 7 full color photo quality printout takes around a minute. And it is all done without disturbing a soul, since this is also one of the quietest printers out there. It has it all. Quality, speed, and it is quiet. In addition, Epson's ink cartridges are very competitively priced compared to those of their rival companies. And you know when you need to buy ink, because every time you print a page, a bar graph shows you exactly how much ink you have left, therefore you will never be caught needing ink in an emergency. Don't waste your money on slower and louder printers that have less quality and make more noise, buy an 880. Whether you have a digital cam or a scanner and want to make GREAT photos, or if you just want a quiet printer to print websites and documents, the 880 is a hit. Also, another printer that has the same quality and costs even less is the Epson Stylus 777. The only difference between the 880 and 777 is that the 777 is slower and much noisier. Either way, you are getting a phenomenal printer at an outstanding price. This is one of the few periphials where you don't get what you pay for. You get a lot more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome printer!, April 18, 2001

I bought the Epson 880 to replace an Epson 440. The 440 printed at 720x360 dpi was relatively slow and somewhat loud. The 880 is without a doubt an awesome printer. It is both fast and quiet. The printer can print in all dpi ranges from 360 all the way to 2880. However, 1440 is plenty sharp. 2880 is almost overkill, not to mention the amount of ink used. It spits out pages of black text in nothing flat. Print those term papers in a matter of a minute or two.

I printed a composite photograph of the Earth at Night (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap001127.html) showing how the world is lit up on clear nights. The printed image is sharper than what it looked like on-screen! And that was only at 1440 dpi!

I shopped for an Epson printer because I was hoping to keep the same printer software. Well of course the 880 included updated software, but it worked about the same as the 440's so I was very satisfied with the supporting software.

Plugged it in, loaded the software, and printed. Couldn't be easier. I printed an existing photo I had and used the software that came with this printer. I couldn't believe my eyes. I just replaced an Epson 740 and what a difference. I paid more for my old printer than I did for this one and got double the dpi with this one. Highly recommend this printer. For the price, it is worth double what I paid for it. The software alone is worth half the price of the printer. Real photo quality at a real affordable price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding !!, March 22, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Epson Stylus 880 Color InkJet Printer (Office Product)
Out of the box, this printer was easy to set up, install and begin printing. And, what an outstanding printer this is. The pictures I printed were virtually identical to photos, and the text clear and crisp. I can't believe the quality/price ratio here, seems like Epson should have charged more.. oh well, my gain and yours too. Buy it you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compete with the Big Boys for a small price!, June 25, 2001

What a joy! For two years I've survived with a brand-name throw-in Printer- you know: the one they give you...with the purchase of a...system, marked down...! Two pages a minute of barely legible B&W; faded-out color that makes your dish-pan hands look radiant! Well, blessedly, that's now history- and for...less yup, [a good price] for the cable: for...complete, complete printing relief can be yours too. It comes in the form of the top-rated Epson 880. The Epson outperforms it's claimed performance- and by a lot! 12 pages per minute of quietly produced, rich B&W. 7+ color pages so faithful to the original that only your hairdresser will know for sure. It took me under 10 minutes to unbox and set-up the Epson, and another 5 to fine tune- and I'm a Klutz! If you want to impress your friends by spending [lots of money] for a fancy, big name Printer- be my guest: but please, don't make me an offer for my Epson!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Product, May 16, 2001

This printer shows quality, when taken out of the box in construction and casing. The speed for things like envelopes is 10x my previous printer. In quality mode, not even using photo paper, and photosetting, it looks like a magazine printing on plain paper. I love it. The cost of cartridges is not excessive either. The software sets it up beautifully in no time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true Sweetheart printer!, August 11, 2001
This review is from: Epson Stylus 880 Color InkJet Printer (Office Product)
Yes, the Epson 880 is a true sweetheart. The price is fantastic. Hook up and down loading was extremly easy. Ink Cartriges slide into place and easly lock down. The printer uses two seperate ink cartriges, and Yes, you can replace only the one that is empty and leave the other one till it's empty. When you lift the lid to get at the cartriges the printer swings the paddle to the center of the printer for easy access. If you close the lid, the printer acknowledges that the exact same cartriges are still in the printer and does not run off any check pages, which wastes ink and paper. Now when you do place a brand new ink cartriges into the printer it does acknowledge the new cartrige and will ask if you want to run a check page or not but only if it detects a new cartrige. Switching to glossy pictures and/or paper takes only a few entries. The help goes right to the point, and I mean right to the point of your question. On average I'll spend about 5-8 minutes in help to solve problems. I cannot stand help sections that make you read almost an encyclopedia of topics before you can find the simle question and answer to your problem. Not with this little sweetheart. The help section goes right to the point and answers are written in easy step-by step instructions to walk you through the problem. That alone is far beyond the little bit of money Epson wants for this color printer. The printer does run a little loud. Especially at night. It might sound loud at night but only because I'm trying not to wake-up anybody in my house. The printer prints a word page in less than 20-seconds and has a cancel or stop button so if you're printing emails you don't have to print all the headings and worthless stuff on the bottom. Epson 880 color printer has earned my Utmost Highest Respect. Look no further my friends...Regards Frank....

4.0 out of 5 stars Great printer for the price, May 22, 2001

This review is from: Epson Stylus 880 Color InkJet Printer (Office Product)
I was in the market for a new printer and read several reviews. I had narrowed my pick down to Epson or HP, but on the strength of the good reviews I've seen for the Epson 880, I decided to get this one. I'm glad I did. The print quality is phenomenal -- very close to the multi-thousand-dollar laser printers I use at work. Setup was fairly easy too. It doesn't have the annoying problem of paper jams like I've seen with the lower-end HP printers, either.

I only have two complaints about it. Firstly, the speed is really slow, even at mid-range resolution (720dpi). Secondly, Epson doesn't support Linux at all. This is a real shame, since I know their printers are popular with quite a few Linux people. Fortunately, there is a project at Sourceforge that has exceptional printer drivers -- Gimp-Print <URL: "http://Gimp-Print.sourceforge.net/index.php3">. Using this with the CUPS project software <URL: "http://www.cups.org/"> will give you really good results.

Bottom line -- great printer for a low price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful printer, December 16, 2003
This review is from: Epson Stylus 880 Color InkJet Printer (Office Product)
This printer is awesome! It prints text and photos very quickly. The ink has a very long life, which is good because it is really expensive! The printer is small and light weight and aesthetically pleasing. I got this printer three years ago and it still works great today.
