A Review of Iron-On Transfer Paper? I must be bored :-),
This review is from: Epson Iron-on Cool Peel Transfer, 8.5 x 11 Inches, 10 Sheets (S041153) (Office Product)
I've only tried a few different brands of Iron-On Transfer paper, (so far Avery, HP and Epson) and I can say that this one works rather well. The ability to peel the transfer paper backing off the shirt when it's cool works better than another brand of paper in which you have to peel the backing when it's still warm.I see two drawbacks and both are minor but significant: 1) The backing of the paper is blank/white just like the front and it's almost impossible to tell which side is the one that you want to print on. One corner of the paper is cut off to tell you the orientation and Epson only has directions for their printer. Basically, if your printer feeds from the bottom, you orient it one way, but... if your printer feeds from the top, it's a different ball game. They tell you this on their website. Other brands of transfer paper have faded words on their paper to tell you which is the back. 2) Epson only provides the clear/white paper. If you try this on any dark colored shirt, you will see the iron-on transfer clearly and it doesn't look good. They mention it in one sentence in the instructions. That's my 2 cents, Victor

I make dozens of t-shirts and tested 4 other brands like Invent-it, Zerox, etc... and by far the Epson brand work the best. I have washed the same shirt 30+ times already and the image looks just as good as when I first made the t-shirt.

I do a lot of my own art design and printing and am frequently dismayed by the lack of imaginative artwork available from professional T.Shirt manufacturers. Also often dissapointed with goods I've ordered online. I have often desired to try using my own designs but was sceptical of results achievable using a home printer.
Decided this week to give Epson cool transfer paper a try - carefully following instructions and using an expendable T shirt to experiment. I needn't have worried - worked perfect first time. There are plenty of pale pastel shade fabrics available that show off the prints superbly ~ these can be inexpensive and make the process cost effective. Laundered and handled carefully they give sufficient wear to provide a decorative alternative and cheap way to customise casual clothing. I'm impressed.

Step.3 ...insert transfer paper with the blank side (printable surface) loaded correctly.
Both sides are blank. I found out the hard way and melted the film on the iron which is now useless. TIP: glossy side is the printable side

The print itself looks great, but when you cut it out and iron it on your white t-shirt, you can see the white background and it looks pretty amateurish. It also has a rather slick feel to it, but I guess most transfers do. It probably wouldnt look very good at all on a t-shirt other than white. But for a quick way to make one or a few custom t-shirts, its very easy, and will get ok results. Try it out, but use a new, white t-shirt.

I need to put images and text on three t-shirts, and having an Epson Photo 890 printer, I naturally ordered the Epson iron-on transfer paper. I was surprised at the color quality of the image transfer - it's really good. For the text, I had to be sure to flip it horizntally before I printed it, so that it wouldn't be backwards on the shirt. I forgot once, but luckily it was on a practice shirt. Overall, I'm happy with the results, and I'll bet when we wear the shirts for an upcoming event, people will be surprised I did it myself.

I don't even own an iron (I had to borrow one) and I've never made a T-shirt before, but I had to make T-shirts for my whole Geography Bee team in a hurry. I ordered these express (thanks, Amazon, for getting my order to me immediately). They are notched in the corners so you know which way to put them in your printer. I forgot to turn on "mirror image" printing for my first print (oops). Then I got it right. I trimmed tight around the designs, used white T-shirts. Then I took my time ironing - following the directions (30 seconds EACH on each pass, up - down - and swirl around) - about 5 minutes total. I left a little handle and was able to peel off without incident. The T-shirts look AWESOME - just like on screen. They have survived a couple of washes just fine. This is the greatest thing since sliced bread!

i just wanted to add that in addition to what everyone has said already, beware that this product rips easily. if you stretch the shirt a little, then your design will become ripped. you also want to do a practice iron on an old shirt just to get acquainted with what part you peal off. hope this helps.

I agree with other reviewers who were confused at which side should be printed on. If you hold it up to the light, one side has wide, glossy, diagonal stripes going across the surface. This is the side that should be printed on. You should also understand how to load paper into your printer to print on the desired side. If you don't have a helpful indicator symbol on the printer itself, draw an arrow on one side of a normal piece of paper and print something.
Also, the fact that you have to print a mirror image may be a stumbling block to some people. The instructions assume that you have an Epson printer that offers this option in the print dialog, but some printers (like my HP inkjet) don't offer mirror image printing as an option, so you would have to do this in a photo editor (e.g. Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, etc). This is a simple procedure in most image editing software but it's an extra step that might be a stumbling block to some people. If you don't have any text in your image, you might not care about printing a mirror image. In addition, once your print out your design, I recommend taking some scissors and cutting away the empty whitespace around your design as closely as possible. It will just reduce the surface area of the shirt that will have the iron-on adhesive on it. The above things aside, I was pleased with the result. I just used my hardwood floors as a surface and followed the ironing directions closely and got a good result. The adhesive from the sheet makes the iron-on area a little stiffer than the rest of the shirt and very slightly yellow if you look closely, but you can limit this by using scissors as mentioned above. I haven't washed the shirt yet so I can't speak to durability. |
