4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent HT on a budget projector!, July 9, 2010
This review is from: Epson EX71 Multimedia Projector (Office Product)
First, let me start by saying I am a DLP guy. Screen doors and less than stellar blacks are usually the knock on mid level LCD projectors. What possessed me to take a chance on the EX-71 when I saw it in the "open box/demo" section, I don't know. Needless to say at $629, this projector is very much worth it's price. Given that this is suppose to be a presentation projector makes me wonder how the settings can be so good for viewing sports and movies right out of the box. Tweaking the settings only helps the image quality, but I can't think there are many business projectors that are this plug and play for home theater.
I also have to comment on how bright this unit is. I just got done watching "The Car"(anyone remember that "classic" from your early HBO days?) on HD cable with the sun beaming in and the picture wasn't close to being washed out.It was amazing how good the PQ was.Keep in mind that the image is 100" and I'm viewing it from about about 10 feet away. I should point out that I have been viewing in ECO mode as well, so you can preserve the lamp while still getting a great image.
The shortcomings of this unit for me are the following. It is not a native 1080p projector so it is impossible to get the same image say as the higher priced Epson 8100. Also, an additional digital port would be great(HDMI or DVI) but it should at least have another component(red, green, blue) input, whether it be the three RCA ports or an additional VGA input. Lastly, the fan noise is more than passable but it could be just a hair quieter.
All pros and cons considered this is a great entry level projector for HT at a price around $650 or less. If you just want to upgrade your "big screen" tv or are looking to replace your first projector for one a little brighter and with an HDMI port, than this unit is for you. Otherwise, cough up another $400-500 dollars and get one of the "budget 1080p units that are coming out now. It all comes down to your expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great device with only one con, August 14, 2010

This review is from: Epson EX71 Multimedia Projector (Office Product)
This is my first projector, so I didn't really know what to expect from a projector. I have seen company and school projectors so I knew what kind of image to expect.

This thing is great. I use the HDMI port connected to my laptop, and I usually watch movies with this thing. Regular movies and DVDs look nice, and HD looks amazing, it's not true ultra-holy-cow 1080p HD, but it is HD nonetheless.

Definitely worth the money. Screens across a medium sized room will easily do 150 inches diagonally.

Color is clear, bright and strong. ECO mode's light brightness is great, on Normal mode you can leave the lights on and still have a good experience.

The one con is blacks. Watching a scary movie with lots of blacks? Playing a game that's dark and gritty? Don't expect any real black but rather the wall as it would be normally, except slightly darker if it's a lit room. This problem is easily remedied by a grey wallpaper and/or a completely dark room, but sometimes that's not possible. This is a problem associated with all cheaper, LCD projectors and not this one projector, though, so don't be quick to label this as "EX71's flaw" but rather LCD's flaw.

All-in-all I love this thing and will be using it for a long time.

John at Lake Park,Ia Just bought an Epson Ex71 projector with an Epson Duet screen to show our friends pictures of our China trip. Super Bowl Sunday I used the projector and screen to watch the game. Used the HDMI port for a high definition picture. The picture was awesome, vivid, bright and true to life, just like one was at the game. The sound from the protector was good but not great. Highly recommend both the EX71 projector and Duet screen.

Excellent picture quality, zoom options aren't the best, but it will do! I bought this projector for the office and after seeing the picture quality, it made me want one for home so I am looking at the Epson 9500HD next!

We use this in a variety of office settings and find it to be well worth the money. Throw distance, brightness, ease of connection, and options are all pretty good for how much it costs.

I use this projector 90% of time to watch DVDs. I have a 150" Elite pull down screen and I can get bright image even with some ambient light in the room. The lense is wide angle and gives me much bigger image at the same screen distance than my older DLP projector. The best feature of this unit, I think, are the simple automated presets for color scheme ans aspect ratio choices (I always use HDMI input for everything going in). With this much magnification there is some pixalation and black is never very dark but I don't find it a problem I cannot live with, it is small price to pay for an reasonably priced unit with this level of brightness and flexibility. For slide presentations this projector is just perfect and I cannot imagine anything else I could possibly want for that kind of use.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best home option, January 27, 2012

This review is from: Epson EX71 Multimedia Projector (Office Product)
I sold me EPSON EX50 and bought this one because of the high def of 1280 X 800 pixels, the HDMI entry and the convenient price.
You simply can't have the 1960 X 1080 with the same amount of lumens this unint have. reaserched it and can't find one option.

I was very surprised when I discovered the small size of the unit. So conveniently small. The 16X9 format makes it perfect to whatch movies, using your computer or connecting your camera to watch pictures.

you don't even need to use the lamp in normal, because the econ mode really just do it perfectly. there is a raise in the volume of the cooling fan but that should not cause any disturnb. it really offers a great size, sharp image and great value.

the down size is that you can't format the picture for 4X3 format.

regarding EPSON support. it really worked!. My unit had a small deffect and I called EPSON support and they sent me the new one in replacement of the one with the issue. Can't be more satisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars EX71 - The Little Projector That Could! (And Does!), December 27, 2011
This review is from: Epson EX71 Multimedia Projector (Office Product)
I manage a vintage movie theatre that has been in operation since 1927. When our old Simplex 35mm projectors went belly-up in the mid-1970s, we converted into a legitimate theatre and have been presenting live stage plays ever since. I have for many years operated the theatre on a shoestring budget, even at times kicking in my own money just to meet utility bills. This past summer we decided to present the musical "Thoroughly Modern Millie" in hopes that we could build up some cash in the box office. After reality set in during rehearsals, we realized that we needed expensive backdrops as well as a means to project supertitles on the proscenium during times when two characters were speaking in Mandarin Chinese. The light bulb came on in my head and I ran home to get my Epson EX71 LCD projector and my Macbook Pro laptop. Overnight, I had created a slideshow that contained the necessary backdrops for the scenes as well as the supertitles. When I pulled the old movie screen down out of the flyspace and projected those slides during the play each night, the audience was suitably impressed.

After the play closed, I thought to myself, "Why can't this work for movies, too? Afterall, we ARE really a movie theatre." So I ran home again and grabbed a handful of vintage movies (laserdisc and DVD) and the necessary playback equipment and hauled all that up to the projection booth. The result was sheer magic! By piping the soundtracks through the theatre sound system already in place, we ended up with a very inexpensive way to herald the return of movies to our theatre. Our movie screen is the traditional "big screen". It is 30 feet wide and 15 feet fall. The distance from the projection booth to the screen is just over 70 feet.

The audience members are always in awe when I tell them what is actually projecting the picture onto the screen. I had been shopping for professional cinematic-quality systems for a couple of years and had backed away from buying them because of the thousands of dollars needed. Little did I know that the $600 machine I used at home as a TV/computer monitor would actually do the trick!

Thank you Epson for creating such a fine piece of equipment! You have a customer for life.
