Product Description

Equal Exchange Organic Panama Extra Dark Chocolate Bar, 3.5 Ounce -- 12 per case. This 80% cacao content bar is Equal Exchanges darkest yet. Unlike many high cacao content bars that are dominated by a bitter or sour note, this bar is perfectly balanced in a way that allows the true chocolate flavor of the Panamanian beans to shine. This bar is made with chocolate liquor from the COCABO co-operative, in Panama, cocoa butter from CONACADO, in the Dominican Republic, and the fairly traded organic sugar comes from a farmer co-operative in Paraguay. Vegan and gluten-free. Shelf Life: 540 Fair Trade, Dairy free, Gluten Free, Kosher, Vegan, Yeast Free, 95 Plus Percent Organic

I have tried many chocolate bars, but this 80% bar is the smoothest and most favorable. You might find a better price for equal exchange chocolate at whole foods.

The Equal Exchange Ecuador bar is one of the tastiest, smoothest chocolate bars I’ve ever had the good fortune to try, and is up there with the world’s best chocolate makers. Good snap and melt, fruity aroma and flavor, but does not overpower the chocolate.

I’ve tried three of the Equal Exchange bars: Panama (80% cacao), Very Dark (71%), and Equador (65%), all of which are organic and fair trade. I was very impressed and would include all three in my current top 10 chocolate bars, alongside the likes of Valrhona’s Caraibe and Michel Cluizel’s Los Ancones. I think the three EqEx bars are on a similar quality level but different in flavor profiles, so I can’t say one of the three is absolutely better than the others—instead of sticking with just one, I’d prefer to eat all three on a rotating basis :)

Compared to other fair trade chocolate bars I think it's at least on a par with Chuao and single-origin bars from Valrhona, and (in my opinion) better than Theo, Rapunzel, Newman’s Own, Green and Black’s, Divine, and Dagoba. If you like the tasty Endangered Species 72% bar you’ll probably like the Equal Exchange dark chocolate bars a little more (and pay a little more too).

There’s a growing trend towards single origin chocolate, and I think it’s a good one: it rewards a particular grower/region for producing higher quality product, helps preserve different varietals, and makes life much more interesting than one that just contains a generic “chocolate”.

Oh, and the packaging is all biodegradable (although the shiny wrap at first looks not) and made from sustainably harvested wood. Overall, this product fully deserves 5/5 gold stars for quality of the product and also 5/5 green stars for the social-ethical-environmental aspects of producing it.

This is a five star item so long as cost is not part of the equation and so long as you do not live where high heat can get to the shipment. We remelt the chocolate and use it in dessert creations. Of course, we wish we had wholesale bulk access.

I thought this chocolate was delicious. There's a hint of sweetness, it's rich and smooth, and it's bitter (at least not to me).
