What is DeBabelizer good at? Automation, batch processing, conversion. What doesn't it do? It's not a full-featured image editor.

DeBabelizer is the ideal tool for people who have to work with lots of images or lots of image formats. The program can take a bundle of pictures in 18 different file formats, convert them to GIFs, crop them, cull a common color palette from them, tie them in a pretzel knot, and serve them steaming hot for dinner - all without your having to so much as click OK. DeBabelizer is a great automated image processor that understands nearly every image file format under the sun.

DeBabelizer owns automated image processing on the Mac, and here's why: BatchLists, powerful internal scripting abilities, and an intelligent eye toward making all of this as easy to use as possible. You can take advantage of built-in basic automation functions - open a set of files and save them in a different location and file format, for example - and add custom scripts at several points in these basic functions. The scripts, which you can build via a watch-me mode in which DeBabelizer records your actions, or via a command-by-command script editor, can be of any length. Scripts can also contain While, If, Then, Else, and Endif statements to let you choose which images get processed and how that processing happens. We tested several scripts and got good results almost right away. The more complex features required some delving into the manual, but those too ran fine.

Scripts aren't the only way to access DeBabelizer's power. With its BatchList function, you can open a palette of files and perform any number of actions on the files listed in that palette - including automatically adding a preview and icon, gathering the most common colors from the images and combining them into a single color palette, and comparing all of the images for identical pixels. You can also include URLs in the BatchList, which tells DeBabelizer to go out over the Internet, grab images from that site, and process them according to whatever script you choose. Pretty spiffy.

DeBabelizer has won the heart of almost everyone at MacAddict. The program almost completely automates a complex conversion and printing process we conduct on every screenshot we publish, and it does so without our intervention. This alone is worth DeBabelizer's cost. -- David Reynolds

Good News: Automation up the wazoo. Drag-and-drop simplicity. Tons of supported file formats - even Dr. Halo.

Bad News: Some features seem hidden. Error prone.
