Book Description

August 22, 2006
Oxford, 2006: a young woman is found brutally murdered, her throat cut. Her heart has been removed and in its place lies an apparently ancient gold coin. Twenty-four hours later, another woman is found. The MO is identical, except that this time her brain has been removed, and a silver coin lies glittering in the bowl of her skull. The police are baffled but when police photographer, Philip Bainbridge and his estranged lover, Laura Niven become involved, they discover that these horrific, ritualistic murders are not confined to the here and now. And a shocking story begins to emerge which intertwines Sir Isaac Newton, one of seventeenth-century England's most powerful figures, with a deadly conspiracy which echoes down the years to the present day, as lethal now as it was then. Before long those closest to Laura are in danger, and she finds herself the one person who can rewrite history; the only person who can stop the killer from striking again...

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written but........, May 4, 2007

THis is a well written book, well researched and executed. There is sufficient conspiracy theories, references to ancient crimes and interesting clues to keep the reader engrossed and turning the pages.

However, I worked out where everyone fitted into this mystery within moments of them being introduced - and I mean every one. This doesn't distract from the quality of the writing, or the story itself, but it does take away from its value as a mystery novel, and that's what stops me from giving it 5 stars.

As I have said, it is a very good read - well researched and constructed, but there are not too many real surprises.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Deadly Secret, October 22, 2006
This review is from: Equinox (Mass Market Paperback)
Michael White is a very accomplished author, but until now he has used his writing skills to produce a number of non fiction books. He has been a professional musician, a newspaper columnist, a science lecturer and science editor for GQ Magazine. He lives in Australia with his wife and children and this is his first novel.

The City of Oxford, 2006. A young woman has been found brutally murdered. Her throat has been cut. But if that is not macabre enough in true "Ripper" style her heart has been cut out of her chest cavity and in the place where it had been lies what appears to be an ancient gold coin. The following day another woman is found, but this time her brain has been removed and a silver coin lies in the bowl of her skull.

The police force are baffled by the crimes but when Philip Bainbridge, a photographer attached to the police and his one time lover Laura Niven become involved in the crimes they discover that these sadistic murders are not just confined to the present. A mystery begins to unfold which involves Sir Isaac Newton, a powerful man, but a man who lived over 300 years ago, with a deadly conspiracy . A conspiracy that echoes down the centuries and is as lethal today as it was all those years ago . . .

I found the storyline enthralling. Fast, powerful and a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Read, April 23, 2010
This review is from: Equinox (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoyed this book from start to finish and to be truthful, I was disappointed to have reached the end. It goes along at a cracking pace, and I found myself longing for the next spare ten minutes so I could return to its pages. A real roller coaster thriller that kept me entertained throughout!
