In the minds of many, buying and selling securities-in this case, equities-to implement the portfolio manager's strategy is a fairly routine task. That kind of thinking, however, has resulted in unnecessarily high transaction costs that eat away at portfolio performance. The authors in this proceedings discuss the measurement and control of trading costs, the benefits of alternative trading systems, the elements of best execution, and a variety of other issues.
