4.0 out of 5 stars Good for what its worth
It is a great tool for what it does. It is very simple and compact and light. It will flash the light on the dash and give you a flashing code that you look up but you might be surprised to know that all you really need is a paper clip and the knowledge of which 2 pins in the OBD1 connector to short together and you will save money. Please be sure you know which 2 pins...

It is a great tool for what it does. It is very simple and compact and light. It will flash the light on the dash and give you a flashing code that you look up but you might be surprised to know that all you really need is a paper clip and the knowledge of which 2 pins in the OBD1 connector to short together and you will save money. Please be sure you know which 2 pins before you try anything maybe even if you have a technician that you know or go to could give you some incite but they might not. The pins that must touch for engine codes are A and B. For ABS(anti-lock braking system) you must touch pins A and H. Hope this helps you in your diagnosis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use reader., July 11, 2008

I use it on my 1987 IROC Camaro which has two methods of diagnosing the Engine lights. One is a jumper cable, the other is using a tool such as this. All I have to do is pop it in, turn the key to ON, and read the codes. Very simple, very light, does not require a degree to use. The booklet that comes with it has a list of codes, their descriptions, and how to start collect the codes from the ECU. However, any GM car repair manual will/should have the same list. It is cheap, and it does what I need it to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice gadget, May 12, 2008

This product is handy to have to locate a source of a "Service Engine Soon" light. It merely grounds the ECM engine pin or the ABS brake pin which are located in the diagonsitc port under the dash and causes the SES light to flash the ECM codes. A paper clip can do the same thing but the GM Code Reader is better because it a accurate and positive fit. The GM Code Reader will only indicate the ECM code and will not tell you anything else after the SES light is seen. Then you must determine what is causing the code to appear. This product is a OBD-1 Code Reader for 1982-1993/4 vehicles and is not the OBD-2 Code Scanner that must be used on the 1995 and later vehicles. The latter has a screen and gives more information with the code. Using the GM Code Reader is a fifteen minute job and gives you a good starting point for locating the trouble and saves you $90 or more by not requiring a so-called "professional" auto mechanic do it for you. It will more than pay for itself after you use it one time.

The first code I observed when I first used the GM Code Reader on my 1991 Chevrolet S10 Blazer SUV was the infamous Code 32, a EGR system malfunction. It apparently was a false code or a temporary code because I did not do or replace anything to correct the problem and the "SES" light has never returned.

This product would not work on my 94 Pontiac although it is listed as a vehicle it will scan on. I have read in forums that other purchasers suffer the same fate -

1.0 out of 5 stars Useful Information, December 20, 2010

This product site does not list the years for which the code reader is intended(1984-1995) nor could I find a link with said info. As the owner of a '98 Chevy, this info would have been helpful. Now I am stuck with a product for which I have no use. I can only speculate as to weather or not this oversite is intentional. I will not be purchasing any more products from this site in the future. Caveat emptor.

I have a 1994 1/2 ton c1500 Chevrolet Pickup with a 6.5L diesel engine. I only found out after reading in the manual that it won't work on diesel engine. That was not said in the descriptionon Amazon website.

Should be named "All GM Except Cadillac". It seems that most Cadillac models of the era have an internal code reading method built in, so this item is not necessary.
