Editorial Reviews

Kenneth W. Harl is a professor of Classical and Byzantine History, joined the faculty of Tulane University with a Ph.D. in history from Yale. He has won numerous teaching awards. The Crusades were a force for profound change in political, cultural, religious, economic, and social life that gave birth to the early-modern age, and these changes still influence the present world. First 12 lectures examine the causes for the Crusades; the second 12 lectures deal with the first century of the Crusades, spanning the era from the preaching of the first Crusade by Pope Urban II in 1095 to the destruction of the kingdom of Jerusalem at the Battle of Hattin in 1187. The last 12 lectures cover the last century of the Crusades, commencing with the Third Crusade (1189-1192), led by the chivalrous King Richard the Lionhearted.
