Headphone Commute Review,
This review is from: Era of Diversion (Audio CD)
What an album! Last year I raved about DJ Hidden's massive The Later After release [also my Best of 2007 selection], and now I'm being slapped with Era Of Diversion by a trio out of Atlanta calling themselves Evol Intent. With "love" spelled backwards, the group members are Ashley Jones (The Enemy), Nick Weiller (Knick), and Mike Diasio (Gigantor). You may have seen these names before on some hard d'n'b labels like Barcode Recordings, Renegade Hardware, and of course their own label, Evol Intent. The debut album includes tracks featuring amazing choppy, dark and crispy IDM breaks, solid hardstep drum'n'bass, abstep, and a selection of super tasteful breakcore. The release mixes in tracks featuring the lyrics by J Messinian (James Fiorella) and drilling spitting rhymes by Cypher Linguistics. And that's not all! We also get a treat from Ewun and a Spor remix. Look, I need just one hard chop to the throat a year. And in 2008 I loose my breath with Era of Diversion. Yet as I grasp for air, moments away from asphyxiation, I get a kick in the groin. These boys just don't play nice. Seriously. If this is what drum and bass is becoming, then I'm ready, even as I'm lying on the floor in the fetal position. And for god's sake, spend some money on a woofer and turn that [low frequency loudspeaker] up! In addition to the above mentioned names, pick up this album if you like SPL, Counterstrike, Technical Itch, Limewax, and Current Value.

the album itself is really good: filthy beat concepts and progression. however, the songs with the guest stars are the least impressive. When I listen to the song with Cypher Linguistics it is painfully obvious that they can't rap at all, their lame name should have tipped me off

An excellent breakout for the Atlanta-based crew. This album explodes into the politically motivated torrent of drum and bass that is the most potent in the genre. It has the slamming floor hits in which you will easily recognize pure Evol, but there are also some interesting tracks where they dabble in mellower glitch and break sounds. Some would call them filler tracks, I myself enjoy seeing the 'other' work that feeds into their style. This is how you (literally) get mosh pits in electronica. You can chase these tracks all over the internet, but I say support these guys, get a cleeeeeeean high quality load, enjoy it cranked, and keep your fingers crossed that this is only the beginning.

If you like glitchy music, like Aphex Twin, you'll love this. It tickles my brain.

At 1st i was kinda upset at this album. It was not what i was thinking it was going to be. but as with all my favorite cd's i listened to it a few times and it kept growing and growing on me. The first song to get me hooked was Gunpowder Plot then it was Middle Of the Night then it was Maybe we will dance tomorrow and it kept on going from there. This disk is a new beginning of Drum and Bass and i am happy to have this cd. I listen to it everyday and plan to for a long time!!!!!!!

Evolve intent,
This review is from: Era of Diversion (MP3 Download)
Forget about drum and bass, these guys are on top of the indie music scene altogether. Their numerous side projects have showcased their varied abilities and styles, and Era of Diversion puts it all on display, combining razor-fine IDM, hip hop soul, breakcore frenzies, metal, dubstep, post rock explosions, and--of course--gritty drum and bass. Listen to it loud or with a pair of good headphones and ponder the evolution of not just Evol Intent, but the music scene itself.

5 stars, really? I've been listening to breaks & D&B for a long time, and I do not get this album at all. There is nothing redeaming about this album whatsoever. If you like old-school Aphex Twin or Luke Slater, you MIGHT like this.
