I bought this game for my son's 11th birthday. He and I are both fans of the series and have read both books. The game was disappointing in several regards. First, the graphics. The animation sequences used when exploring the world are fine, and even attractive. The cutscenes, however, are done in a choppy and poorly defined style that does not match the game sequences and detracts from the overall quality of the game. Second, the narration. As my son pointed out, there is too much narration and not enough action. Rather than telling us that Eragon is a simple farmboy, that could have been done by allowing us to preview a bit of his life as a farmboy, and then we would have been able to meet his cousin and uncle and the rest of the villagers. Those people play a large role in the next book and so it would have had a point to it. Last, the game is too short. By glossing over the full story line through the use of narrated cutscenes to cover outrageously large chunks of the book, you end up with game play which takes my son a total of perhaps 8 hours to complete. My advice to anyone looking to purchase the game is to rent it instead and put the rest of your money toward something with a higher replay value. This game just isn't it. It is fun while it lasts, despite the annoying cut scenes and the glossing over of the story, but it doesn't last long enough to be worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars A MOTHER'S REVIEW, November 27, 2006
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Eragon (Video Game)
I am an avid reader and love to read good books. My son recommended I read Eragon. I did, and I truely loved it. I am now in the process of reading Eldest. When I heard the movie and game was coming out I couldn't wait. I now have the game and am enjoying playing it. I am only around level five or six but it has been extremely fun to play. My only complaint is the lighting in some parts of it. It is so dark you can't see a thing. You don't know if there is something you are suppost to be attacking or where you are suppost to go. It makes completing the levels very difficult. I walked around one area for over an hour before figuring out what I was to do and where to go next. This is really fraustrating. I will difinetely be purchasing the strategy quide in the near future so I know what to do. Other than that slight problem I have found this to be a really fun game. The controls are not that difficult once you get use to them. I would recommend this game for those who love games that tie in with the movies and books. Four Stars!

Bought this game for my teenage daughter even though certain reviews said it was too short and too easy. Were they trying it on the hard mode? Not everyone wants a game to be as involved as Final Fantasy. She loved it! She read the book, saw the movie and was caught up it the beauty and fantasy of the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST Ever!!!!!!, December 9, 2006
A Kid's Review
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Eragon (Video Game)
I love this game so much! I got it, then beat the whole thing in less than 24 hours. The game is action packed, and is a level type game. It's not like the lord of the rings, where you are put somewhere, and you have to figure out what to do and where to go. There is a trail that you have to follow. You have a partner with you (you know that if you've read the book). There are 16 levels in the whole game. For every level, you get to pick whether you want to play the level in easy, normal, or difficult mode (I always chose to play it in the normal mode). Any Eragon fan will love this game! Thanks, and I hope you get this and enjoy it as much as I did!

I bought this game for my 11 year old for Christmas. He is a huge Eragon fan and has read all of the books. He played the game non-stop for the first few days and I was hearing words like excellent, awesome, etc.

Good buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST GAME EVER, January 10, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Eragon (Video Game)
This game is the best ever. It is so cool. It has a lot of action. It is a very hard game. The hardest part is when you fight the razac. A secret to the game is to collect all the secret eggs, and fight Durza's soldiers endlessly.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREATEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, April 14, 2007

AMAZON, YOU HAVE TO POST THIS!
Everyone who said this game is boring is wierd! this is the GREATEST game EVER!!!!!here are the pro's and cons of this game.

pros;
1.good multiplayer.
2.a clear path(you know what you have to do unlike Zelda)
3. fighting moves are AWSOME, especaly murtagh's moves(you can be him in two player for half of the game the other half is brom). Eragon's magic is really fun to use! i loved setting bad guys on fire!

cons;
1.Graphics are about a 3 star in the cutsenes, 4 star in game.
2. about the cut senes, you can skip them and their aren't that many. only the beginning and ending of levels, and sometimes in between to show you what is going on.
3. well, i can''t think of a three.

I give it an overall 5 stars and is a MUST GET GAME!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected, January 1, 2007
A Kid's Review
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Eragon (Video Game)
I'll start off by saying this: This is NOT what I expected. I got this game for Christmas and thoght it would be really good. WRONG! First off, the fighting gets really repetitive. You can only do a couple of different moves, and about 2 or 3 actually work well. When I play I find myself doing the jump attack over and over because it's the only one that works well. Also for the PS2 version, you only ride Saphira 3 times! What the hell is up with that?! The second time you ride her, you have to set fire to Urgals. I keep pressing x and nothing happens! For the last level when you fight Durza, it shouldn't be called a boss battle. Ending boss battles are supposed to be hard and challenging. All you do is shoot arrows and you kill him in about 3 minutes. The controlls are also annoying. I keep pressing triangle to jump and nothing happens. Last is the graphics. They look like o.k. PS1 graphics. They're horrible! Also the voicing is horrible. They don't look like they're talking at all. Overall, I'd give this 2 out of 5.

1.0 out of 5 stars uhhhhh crap, November 21, 2006
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Eragon (Video Game)
I truly loved this book (and the follow up "Eldest"). But I have to admit that this is one poorly made game. The graphics are on par with the early days of the PS2 and not what I have come to expect. From the 3 levels that I could stomach I found the controls choppy, the interaction between Eragon and Brom non exsistent and ultimatly found Brom to be quite a useless partner when taking out any enemy. 9/10 his bow shots miss and he rarely ever quickly finishes anyone off leaving you to do most of the work. From what I read in the book it was Brom who constantly saved Eragon not the other way around. Methods of healing are few and far between. most times you find yourself going through check point after check point toughing it out with what little health you start with. the cut scenes between each level do nothing to really help the story but as an excuse to not reveal too much information about the story itself. Quite early in the story Sapphira helps out in a big way and her part in this story I have yet to see other than the reason that the entire story picked up. Had I not read the book I can easely see myself not really caring about any of the characters and generally wondering, "Why am I wasting my time with this?" coupled with "Thank God I rented instead of buying."

My only hope is that the movie lives up to what the book gave us or I am going to be really disappointed that we have to wait even longer for the third installment to come out while we wait for 2 crappy movies to be released.

See movie review for how that turned out.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must for any dragon fan and a good game besides, November 23, 2011
By
Bridin (Somewhere over the rainbow) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eragon (Video Game)
Visuals: 7/10
Okay, the visuals aren't the best. A lot of scenes are REALLY DARK and it's hard to see. I just use the Fury Mode cheat (Press pause, hold down r1, r2, l1, l2, SQUARE SQUARE O O). This makes you a lot stronger. Magic (for eragons- first players) increases much, much faster. Also, your sword glows and you're easier to see. Which is good because that's hard when you're just one of those people in the mess of them. When there's magic, the blue warning is very bright, and that's good. Every once in a while, they'll have a little slow motion of you killing a bad guy- it's not bad then, actually, but still not spectacular. Arya is plain. Durza is frightening.

Audio: 6/10
The music's fine. A little annoying if you play this game for hours- which I have. It's nothing to rave about- positively or negatively.

Plot: 7/10
It closely mirrors the plot of the book- NOT THE MOVIE. You start hunting in the Spine (where it gives you a good tutorial) and hunt deer. Find the stone. You meet Brom. Fight. A lot. There's some more plot to it but you're basically just fighting for a while. Then you fight Durza. Don't feel bad when he comes back- because he will. The last level is you on Saph. and Durza on his steed and you have to fry him and not get fried in return. I beat this one on my first try but only because I learned a lot from the DS version (I'm stuck on this level on DS).

Game controls: 9/10
It's good. You COULD just press the attack buttons. There's no one stopping you. And you might even do okay, I guess. But that's not advantegous. There are so many effective combinations to use, your bow (If I remember right, you don't need arrows on the PS2 but you DO, I know, on the DS), and magic (For Eragon only, not Brom). There's a tutorial on the first level. Even though Brom can't play through it (He comes in RIGHT AFTER), he should pay attention so he knows what to do. The controls are the same, even if Brom never gets magic.

Fighting: 8/10
It's fine. Good even. Fury mode lets you do MUCH better in battle and magic does too, though neither is all that helpful when you're fighting Durza. It's fine, a little mind numbing at time. You have to use some strategy, though. It's fun.

Skill level: 10/10
I'm not saying it's HARD. In fact, I'm just saying it's not too hard or too easy. It's lots of fun. Sometimes, though, you just have to start the level over because you've missed something. Don't let it get you down; it's great fun!

Multipplaying: 8/10
Okay- I've only ever played as Eragon so I don't get the short end of the stick but I can understand when it gets hard and/or annoying for the other person. While Eragon gets magic, Brom NEVER does. Ever- and I can say that because I finished this bloody game. Never. Furthermore, sometimes you just NEED the second player to drop out (like when you have to walk slowly along some beams. My dad has to drop out then but I really like doing it). ON THE PLUS SIDE, they found a way for both people to participate when Eragon is riding his dragon. One of you is Sapphira and the other is Eragon. Sapphira (player 2) has to follow a course and tries to eat birds, which give her health. Eragon shoots targets, or Raazac, depending on the course.

Replay factor: 10/10
I LOVE this game. I've finished it twice and started many times again with my friends.. It's loads of fun!

Overall(not an average): 8/10
I LOVE THIS GAME. It's tons of fun. Has a few failing points, especially for the second player, and in the graphics department. USE THE FURY MODE CHEAT.
