Book Description

0471419036 978-0471419037 August 8, 2002
"The book is an indispensable reference for researchers, development engineers, and system designers in fiber-optic communications. . . . It will excel as an introductory text in upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses on system applications of fiber optics." --Optik

"One of the most comprehensive and detailed accounts of the physics and fundamental principles of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. . . . I do not hesitate to recommend the book enthusiastically to anyone having an interest in EDFAs and their applications." --Physics Today

Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers are an important technology for lightwave voice, video, and data transmission. The first volume of Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers: Principles and Applications offered an important exploration of the then-infant technology of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. The passage of the 1996 Telecommunications Act and the growth of the Internet have sparked intense demand for expanded bandwidth in all network layers, resulting in significant advances in EFDA technology.

Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers: Device and System Developments brings telecommunications professionals up to date. Combining the contributions from four international experts in EDFAs, this new volume expands the reader's conceptual understanding of EDFAs and covers the developmental issues of EDFAs that are relevant to modern telecom applications. The authors review:

New aspects in EDFA modeling, including the standard confined-doping, the transcendental-power-equation, and average-inversion-level models Design concepts for EDFAs in terrestrial and submarine WDM systems Transmission fiber design and dispersion-management techniques for terabit/s systems Amplified submarine-cable systems, including a brief history of submarine cable communications and the investigation of terabit/s system technologies Advanced concepts in the physics of noise in amplified light, noise figure definitions, entropy and ultimate capacity limits Delving into fundamental concepts (including a wealth of previously unpublished materials) as well as important breakthroughs, this much-needed resource will place telecom engineers in a position to take advantage of every aspect in the broad potential of EDFAs.

About the Author

EMMANUEL DESURVIRE has been involved in the field of optical fiber amplifiers for nearly twenty years, starting with his PhD work on Raman fiber amplification in 1981-83. For his contributions to the early investigation and development of EDFAs at AT&T Bell Laboratories, he received several national and international awards, including the 1994 prize from the International Commission for Optics and, jointly with Professor D. N. Payne, the 1998 Benjamin Franklin Medal in engineering. He is currently Director of the Alcatel Technical Academy, a corporate program that aims to recognize experts and foster synergies in research and development. An IEEE Fellow, he has authored or coauthored more than 200 technical publications and 30 patents.
DOMINIQUE BAYART graduated as Physics Engineer from the National Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble (France) in 1990. He joined Alcatel Research and Innovation (Marcoussis, France) in 1991 and is now Deputy Manager for the Photonic Transmission Unit. He has contributed 12 postdeadline papers to major conferences (OFC, ECOC, OAA) and authored or coauthored more than 70 technical publications and 30 patents.
BERTRAND DESTHIEUX received an MS in physics from Limoges University, France, and graduated as an engineer from Orsay's ?cole Sup?rieure d'Optique in 1990. He is a former team leader at the Alcatel Transmission System Division in Nozay, France. After Alcatel, he joined Latus Lightworks in Richardson, Texas, as manager of the optical transmission engineering department. He is now a senior engineer in the photonic department at Xtera Communications, Inc., in Allen, Texas. He has authored or coauthored nearly 20 technical publications and 15 patents.
S?BASTIEN BIGO received an engineering degree from the ?cole Sup?rieure d'Optique in 1992 (Orsay, France) and a PhD from the University of Besan?on (France) in 1996. He is the leader of the WDM transmission group at Alcatel Research and Innovation, which obtained several multi-terabit/s transmission records, and has authored or coauthored more than 80 papers and 25 patents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique Reference on EDFAs, October 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers, Device and System Developments (Hardcover)
This book is clearly a natural complement to the EDFA "Bible" written by E. Desurvire. The four top rate scientists and authors bring together an unparallel understanding of the subject through their experience and divers of points of view. From pure physics, R&D to systems applications, the amazing wealth of information provides an up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of rare earth doped fiber amplifiers. I recommend this book as an indispensable Reference for both professionals and students involved in the studies of optical fiber amplifiers

5.0 out of 5 stars Must for optical engineer, November 4, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers, Device and System Developments (Hardcover)
This book covers almost all the aspects in designing optical transmission system. Considering the fact that optical amplifiers are indispensable in modern optical transmission systems, it is with reason that the book covers not only EDFA but also FEC, Q factor measurement and even Raman. Compared to its predecessor, it is more engineering oriented. In addition to its very useful appendices, description on actual systems, terrestrial and submarine, are very informative and inclusive. In particular, chapter 2 gives a very good insight into the nature of optical noise. Therefore, I would like to recommend it to every engineer in optical communication field.

5.0 out of 5 stars A most needed goldmine, September 13, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers, Device and System Developments (Hardcover)
Since the so-called EDFA " Bible " was released in 1994, most EDFA experts - or late converts, jumped in the cash-making bandwagon of lure and deceit. Ganged-up with scientifically illiterate marketers/analysts, some of them forgone their science upbringings and ethics to promise to gullible investors the moon of "infinite bandwidth" in $/s/GHz units. But in academia and industry, more serious people developed the true EDFA 'science'. Over the past ten years, their work overflowed the field with thousands of technical journal/conference papers. Given such a proliferation (also including a fair share of hype), those familiar with the surviving " Bible " have been craving all this time for an updated reference. This book release not only comes timely, but also overwhelms chicken-soup chapter books published years ago. As the authoritative foreword states, Desurvire wisely prevailed upon his world-class expert colleagues to put altogether such this incredible 'tour de force'(again). Their thorough review should save days and months of desperate search for answers and background materials. This includes many difficult calculations and system-optimization issues which all developers struggle with. Actually, some people may resent that their well-garded little secrets are now made available to all! This book is an information goldmine every page you may look at. Like the first one, it is the kind of scientific reference that will never be outdated nor proved wrong, no matter future developments. Five stars and A^+!..
