5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas present
I bought this for my Grandson for Christmas and he and his Daddy love it. They really like to play with toys where you can build.

3.0 out of 5 stars A very basic set.
I got this set for my son, who just turned 7. After receiving Knex and Legos and Bionicles, he was visibly disappointed when he opened this. "It's for little kids," he cried. Oops. The package says for 5 - 8 year olds, but if you've got a good little builder on your hands, it's probably going to be beneath their abilities.

It is a nice Erector Set, but...

It is a nice Erector Set, but VERY basic. There really isn't anything exciting about it. There aren't enough pieces to make anything really creative, and the tools (a non-adjustable wrench and 'screwdriver') aren't very functional. After a few frustrating minutes, my son tossed the tools aside and tightened the nuts and bolts with his fingers.

The lid doesn't latch closed, it just sets on the top of the tub. It's pretty deceiving -- I thought it latched somehow, but nope!

The instruction booklet contains directions for four items: a giraffe, a swingset, an Indian headdress, and a bow and arrow. It also has pictures of other things you can make, including a 2 dimensional house, tree, numerals, and a boat, and a 3 dimensional plane.
The directions are fairly simple, with pictures of how to assemble the creation, a list of parts needed for that step, and no reading required.

Pieces included are:
9 - 9 1/2" straight pieces: 2 red, 4 orange, 3 white
5 - 6" straight pieces: 4 white, 1 green
4 - 4 1/2" straight pieces: 2 yellow, 2 white
7 - 3 1/2" straight pieces: 5 white, 2 green
3 - 2" straight pieces: 1 yellow, 2 white
4 - 90 degree angle corner pieces, yellow
4 - 135 degree angle corner pieces, white
1 - L-shaped flat piece, orange
1 - T-shaped flat piece, green
3 - triangular flat pieces, green
34 - nuts
34 - bolts
1 - 'screwdriver'
1 - non-adjustable wrench

It is a decent set, but nothing exciting. This will definitely NOT be one of my son's favorite building sets -- in fact, I can see it being passed on to a younger friend in the near future. It's just too basic, too boring, and too simple.

My 4 year old was excited by the prospect of the screwdriver and wrench, but both he & my 5 yr old found that their fingers worked much better for the screws/nuts.

They did build a few things, but were quickly bored with the items they could build based on the number of pieces available.

Legos & Kid K'nex are played with much more often than this set.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great starter set for a preschooler, December 29, 2009

I bought this for my six year old son who loves to build with Lego and Magnetix. He instantly decided it was a baby toy and didn't want to play with it. Once he did he really liked the idea of building this way so I bought him a big boy erector set - which he loves.

When my son tossed this aside my daughter who was 3 1/2 took it and immediately started building her own creations. A year later she still loves this toy. It is a great introduction to building but does not have enough pieces to build anything large. This is great for children who need to work on fine motor skills. This would probably be best for a child around 4 years old.

This item is too difficult for a six year old even though advertised as for 5-8 year olds. You cannot return the item once opened, so do not order.
