I purchased this set as a gift for my son so that we could do projects together. Initially I was very excited having been raised with erector sets myself.

The problems:

The circuitry for the 6V motor destroys batteries/don't use rechargables if you don't want to lose a fortune;

The rubber drive belts split apart with normal use/no spares are provided;

The motor mount required machining in a drill press before it would work (poor manufacturing tolerances);

The functions of the finished projects tend to be grossly disappointing because of lack of quality, things bind-up;

Many projects are difficult to bulid due to almost impossible access issues. The smallest of fingers cannot reach some of the necessary fastener application steps.

Rubber keepers split without excessive force being applied and there's not a single spare included;

Some custom tooling had to be improvised to complete some of the builds.

I am a professional hands-on machine designer and builder and have reasonable expections. This is not a viable product

Looks good right out of the box, but if you actually try building anything with it you will realize that this product was not built or designed to be played with. The battery pack constantly pops apart. On the first day we had to tie it together with string to get it to work. The items they have for you to build are disappointing to build because the parts bind up and don't actually work. Agree wholeheartedly with the reviewer on March 7, 2010 who also gave this mess one star.

I have a 7 year old son who loves to build and take things apart to see how they work. Out of the box the concept of this toy was a bit advanced for my son. We spent an hour a night for about a week building on a tractor let it run the kitchen a few times, then tore it down and started on the 4-wheeler. It was a great opportunity first for me to spend time with my son doing something we both enjoy and second to teach him some basic principles of how gears work and parts go together to support the over-all structure. Now he has a firm understanding and can build any project in the book with very little if any guidance. I recommend this for any parent that has a child who likes to see how things work. Make sure you take the opportunity to work with them. It has plenty of teaching opportunities ranging from how to keep your work area tidy and organized to how power gets from the motor to the wheels.

This product says ages 8-88. 8 may be a little on the young side. Expect this to be a joint activity with the adult/parent. Very nice change of pace from the other toys/activities though.

This is really a very good set. My 8-year old son loves to build and follows directions very well, so he has done most of the work on his own. There are a good variety of projects in this set.

My only real complaint is that the motor is underpowered. Many of the projects end up being fairly heavy and the motor just isn't sufficient to move that much weight. This is disappointing to a kid who has finished a project that doesn't really work because the motor isn't strong enough.

We have an older erector set as well. The new set parts aren't as durable as the older set, like most things these days. I do think they made a great move going to the use of Allen wrenches vs. tiny screwdrivers to tighten things. This seems to be much easier.

Overall a great building toy that would be a five star toy with a slightly stronger motor.

WOW, I really loved Meccano when I was young, it is a wonderful educational toy, I bought for my 9 yrs old son, and he was very happy with it, in the begining I helped him in assemblelling the motor, and in 1 of the models, after this he went through it by his own, the only thing that i can say about it, that the box is very cheap, that I think it will stay for just few weaks, and then my son will face a problem of how and where he will store the Erector parts, so I think if Erector would put some plastic boxes with covers to store the small parts, that will be great, so I will get him some third party plastic boxes to do so.

We gave this to our 8-year old son for Christmas. He was excited to see the real metal materials and nuts/bolts. He needed some help tightening some bolts, but otherwise did a decent job constructing projects on his own.

This was a birthday present for grandson's 7th birthday. He already had one for the younger age group and wanted to do more things. The Erector 30 Model Set 352 Piece Set was an instant hit! He put together the motor part, then his older sister also got interested and a few hours later, with her help, he was playing with a lawnmower that moved much faster than anyone expected. Then he disassembled it because he couldn't wait to make something else. Great product both for fun and learning to follow step by step instructions...but it would be nice if it had its own storage case...I found a small "tool box" but not perfect.

This is a great erector set and a great value. Can make lots of different vehicles and models and the 6V motor works well.

Bought this for my grandson, purchased it early (hugs mistake)- fast shipping, great seller, manufacturer sucks . . . . emailed them twice that there are 8 parts missing - nothing, tried to get contact information ie . . .phone etc, cant find it. Clearly they are not US based and you get what you pay for - its junk. I had one of these when I was a kid and this is not YOUR erector kit or anything even close to it !!!! Bottom line, dont waste your money . . .quality control went the way of US manufacturing jobs . . . . gone forever. Guess I will just have to be happy with the box of parts I have that wont build anything . . . . thanks for nothing !!!
