Erector sets have their issues, but are useful for some building projects because of sturdiness.,

General review of current erector sets
Both of our kids (13yr old boy and 10 yr old girl) are building enthusiasts (Lego, Kinex etc). They are able to build the most complicated Lego and Kinex structures on their own, including building and programming Lego Mindstorms. We also have a mulitple Erector sets . Here are the positives and negatives of Erector *Good: Mostly, once a project is built it is quite sturdy and can be played with without worry about it falling apart. All parts are interchangeable with all other kits, even ones a few decades old. Kit can be used to build parts for use in other play, or for projects. For example a ramp for the Mindstorms robot or a part to hold up a light needed for a science fair project. The storage boxes are nice for organization and fairly sturdy. *Bad It requires a fair amount of manual dexterity to put some of the models together. It can be hard to hold the pieces and try to screw them together with the bolts with just one set of hands. Adult help will be needed fairly often. Even then, the adult will sometimes struggle to get the parts into place. Age 8 is defiantly too young to work on these solo. Not because of the intellectual complexity but because of the manual skills needed. *Ugly Sets are sometimes missing pieces. Count them when you get them before starting building. The motors are iffy quality and as far as my kids are concerned, underpowered. This particular set is a bit too specific, building only cars and one at a time. In general I would give Erector sets 3.5 stars (for the issues above) but this one ranks only 3 because of the dependency on the motor to be fun and the questionable track record of our motors.

Out of the box this set not only had a defective motor but also had a crushed battery compartment. We looked up a customer service number and now that the Erector sets are made in China and distributed in France there is only 1 number listed in Texas. Guess what? It doesn't work so I had to call Canada to get a different number for someone who told me the only way to get replacement parts is to email some guy at meccane (who will not reply) and then wait a "couple of weeks". Enough already, I will be returning the set today and will have to deal with the crying child who now has no birthday set. Did I mention the second I said I put the motor together they cut me off and said oh its defective so obviously they knew about the problem!!! Sad sad sad

There is nothing wrong with the product. The problem is your sloppy employees who tore up the cardboard cover on the set. There is no excuse for this behaviour which causes the collectable value to be lowered and customers to be dis-satified. I think you should refund part of the purchase price.
