4.0 out of 5 stars Life after After... June 27, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Ihsahn's previous album After was easily his most realized work of his solo career, incorporating more complex arrangements, progressive ideas, denser sound manipulations, and inventive song structures into his craft. I was really curious to hear what direction he'd take on Eremita.

For those of you who have been turned off by the heavy use of saxophone on After, you need to know that Jorgen Munkeby of Shining is still part of Ihsahn's songwriting vision. He weaves into the compostions during pivotal moments, injecting the passages with avant-garde elements that bring to mind a weird marriage of Univers Zero and Ulver circa Perdition City. At times, the saxophone is employed to underscore the metallic thrust that dominates the mix while there's also plenty of space for solo saxophone lines resolving the themes. On the bonus track, the ballady "Recollection," for instance, we listen to Ihsahn singing over a slow-paced sax tune, which is quite a departure from his other material.

Eremita features a bigger list of guest musicians than prior albums. After having worked with Garm and Mikael Akerfeldt before, Ihsahn exchanges verses with the great Devin Townsend on "Introspection," a song informed by clean acoustic guitars in its intro and, thus, recalling Townsend's Ghost for a moment. It then adopts a jazz-inflicted solo before giving way to Ihsahn's classic shriek and an infectious run-out solo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Progressive Metal Masterpiece June 20, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I usually don't write reviews on here, but after listening to Eremita and seeing that it currently has a 2.5 star rating, I just had to do something.

For fans who like the progressive direction Ihsahn has followed from Prometheus to Adversary to angL to After and now to Eremita, this will be right up your alley. I feel like this album is a very natural (and welcome) step for Ihsahn as an artist and songwriter. I will go so far as to say that this is my favorite piece of work Ihsahn has produced.

For those looking to compare this record to early Emperor offerings, don't expect to find many similarities. This is not Emperor. This is Ihsahn. The saxophone is back, and I think that it is used much more appropriately on this record than previously. It works quite well and adds a lot to the sound of the album and the songs and doesn't sound like a gimmick at all. And all of the guest musicians add wonderful contributions to an amazing overall piece of art.

So if you like progressive metal at all, I highly recommend giving this a listen. I love it. I also love Devin Townsend, so I couldn't disagree more with the reviewer below who gave this 2 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ihsahn never fails to impress June 20, 2012
By Alexia
Format:Audio CD
I have to agree with the other reviewer, this album deserves a better rating. Ihsahn is a genius in making music. I do miss Emperor, but I have settle with Ihsahn's solo work. The Paranoid is one of my favorite songs, which reminds me of Emperor in some way. If you are a fan of Emperor, this is a must get, besides Ihsahn is the brains behind Emperor, sure I miss the raw power from Samoth and Trym, but Ihsahn is the man.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite November 26, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A very interesting fusion of metal (never thought the sax could ever be a part of metal music, Ihsahn proved me wrong) made this album already one of my favorites on the very first listen.
This is a music masterpiece interestingly crafted into exquisiteness to the ears. I like almost every metal genre which exist and I also enjoy jazz and classical music. Listening to this album made me feel the thrill and excitement caused by fresh metal sounds which I have been missing for a long time... that thrill that very few albums, among thousands, have given me.

4.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENCE!! June 26, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
I had heard a lot of mixed reviews about this CD. However; a mediocre Ihsahn CD is better than most other CDs. After a few listens, I can definitely say that this is my new favorite Ihsahn CD. It ranks up there with any Emporer CD. The music is full of depth; layers; dimensions! The vocals (and guest vocals) are epic in both sound and range. His guitar playing is just as amazing as ever.
The lack of 5 stars comes from his song Grave. It would have made a better "short interlude" than a 5 minute song. It really slowed down the CD's momentum.
Other than that, it will be a regular addition to my playlist-along with the new Moonspell and Ulver.
the highlights are: the Arrival, Introspection, The Eagle and The Snake, and Something Out There!
