The Eremitic Life offers a glimpse into the rhythms of a hermit, from a Camaldolese perspective, part of the Benedictine family of monastic communities. Most are not called to this life. Yet Fr. Wencel offers applicable insights into the value of silence, solitude and prayer in any person's life, especially those seeking holiness. Christian introverts will also find this intriguing, as it does affirm our greater-than-average need for alone time to recharge with God. This is meant to be read slowly and in pieces - take your time with it - there's a lot in there.

This book was written by a Polish hermit of the Camaldolese Monte Corona order. I found "The Eremitic Life" to be quite informative about the thought process of an enclosed hermit. I also found myself reading four or five pages, setting the book down and contemplating what was said. Invariably, the slower and more deliberatively I read the more I took away from Fr. Wencel. This book is not something to be rushed through.

There is not a lot of published material about the eremitic life in general and the Coronese Camaldolese in particular and I heartily recommend "The Eremitic Life" for those with an interest in either subject.

I'm glad this book is in my library.
