Book Description

July 11, 2008
Before telling the story of my father's second visit to the remarkable country which he discovered now some thirty years since, I should perhaps say a few words about his career between the publication of his book in 1872, and his death in the early summer of 1891. I shall thus touch briefly on the causes that occasioned his failure to maintain that hold on the public which he had apparently secured at first.

About the Author

Samuel Butler (1835-1902) is best known for his utopian satire “Erewhon”, his posthumous novel “The Way of All Flesh”, and his translations of Homer. His family background made a career in the Church inevitable, but, while serving a low-income parish in London, he began to question his faith. He lived in New Zealand for five years, and later in life spent time in Italy. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good and still relevant book, August 17, 2001
The book deals with Higgs' return to Erewhon. Some unpleasant surprises are in store for him, place is entirely unrecognizable due to new religion - sunchildism. Higgs, the Sunchild, finds it hard to beleive how his sayings got so corrupted and is unable to do anything about it. Declaration that he is the Sunchild only brings his life in danger, since professors of Music Banks are not going to let go new lucrative businees just like that. Fascinating book, dealing with rise of new religion out of one "miracle" (i.e. unexplainable event such as Higgs escape in a baloon) account of which grew out of proportion every year.
