4.0 out of 5 stars Dark, well written, and thought provoking - Highly recommended!
Ergo Proxy is an interesting series set in a well-developed, believable, and very detailed post-apocalyptic world. The show opens in the domed city of Rondo, but just as the audience begins to get familiar with that dystopian setting, the series opens up and shows us what the ravaged world outside the "civilized" domes look like.

3.0 out of 5 stars Confused??
I like to think of myself as an intelligent person with a good understanding of anime. I have been watching anime for years. I do like the imagery and style of Ergo Proxy but the mondane dialogue leaves much to be desired. Most people will say the series seriously needs a second season; of course we will never see. Highly conversational and theorictal, Ergo Proxy lacks...

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark, well written, and thought provoking - Highly recommended!, July 15, 2010

For a Sci-Fi Anime series, Ergo Proxy is surprising in that it does not concentrate on the action very much (some episodes include no fighting at all), and instead keeps the focus squarely on the characters and their journey. Make no mistake, this is a good thing! Despite the extraordinary circumstances and situations that the characters get themselves caught up in from episode to episode, they still feel genuine; due in large part to a near-perfect combination of well-written scripts, gorgeous character animation, and really excellent voice-acting.

The only real compliant I have about the show is that it seems to end too abruptly. The last two episodes get very deep into philosophy, and major world-changing events, and then its over with little to no wrap up. It almost feels like the creators were planning on continuing into a second season, but it was not meant to be... and so the ending of the series is not quite as satisfying as the rest of the episodes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stimulating and thought upon thought provoking, February 17, 2010

This series will blow your mind. Ergo Proxy wasn't written for those that wish for a leisurely anime experience, but for those no holds barred day dreamers. Whether your an anime fan or not, you will find yourself engorged in the unique story line. Compare it to that book you just couldn't put down. If you liked Noein, you'll love Ergo Proxy. 5 Stars and nothing less.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value!, October 28, 2009

I've loved Ergo Proxy, ever since it came out back in 2006. The art is extremely well done, and the soundtrack is lush and futuristic. I would place this series at the top of my favored anime list. I did not get a chance to experience the dubbing as I tend to watch my anime with subtitles. I will say that the translation of the subtitles can be a tad bit spotty in parts, with examples of Engrish popping up occasionally. Not something to be concerned about, as it will not distract the viewer too much from absorbing the story. The price seems very reasonable for the quality of the series. 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Post-Cyberpunk Series, July 29, 2010
This review is from: Ergo Proxy: The Complete Series Box Set (Viridian Collection) (DVD)
One of my favorite series. Fans of Bladerunner, Ghost in the Shell, and dystopian cyberpunk/scifi will probably like it. In a way, though, it really has more in common with Haibane Renmei, Serial Experiments: Lain, and other shows where the "action" is mostly emotional or psychological.

Be ready to think, because Ergo Proxy is heavily philosophical and intellectual. It's a show that deals with both the fate of humankind, and the confusion of personal identity and self-awareness. Although there is some action- in fact, there are a few brilliant action sequences in the course of the show- Ergo Proxy is generally more meditative in pacing. There are several episodes that will blow your mind, not with explosions, but with the deep existential questions they raise.

The character design, I believe by the same team who did Witch Hunter Robin, is perfect. This is a "realistic" show, scifi elements aside, and humans are fragile and easily killed. Real, as a visual centerpiece, is brilliantly designed in a sort of post-gothic, corporate-industrial way. Her look both embodies and rejects the alienation and the enforced order of her society. There is very little fan service, save in the first episode.

The music is brilliant, the animation is solid, and the story will twist your mind.

Oh, and the ending doesn't suck. I was seriously worried they would "pull an Eva," but it ends with a good balance of closure and mystery.

You can probably find the opening/intro on YouTube... it will give you a good feel for the series' art style and character design. Just watching it sold me immediately.

So... GET IT!

Spoiler free short review ^_^

Ergo Proxy is a brilliant anime.

If your looking for a mystery/horror stylized art anime, this is your answer. It is worth every penny, so order it now on amazon and buy it immediately!!!

As a side note, this anime collection does fit a widescreen HD TV FULLY. (No more side black bars, yay!) Looks fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too Expensive, July 14, 2011
This review is from: Ergo Proxy: The Complete Series Box Set (Viridian Collection) (DVD)
I absolutely love the series and watched it ever since it came out and when I saw the Viridian Collection of it I was so excited......till I saw the prices.

Me, as a buyer from amazon for who knows how many years, thinks that the pricing for this is not worth it. Seriously? $100-$200 as a price range?

Im not buying it. BUT still the 5 star for the awesomeness of an amazing show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anime Noir at its best, January 20, 2011

This is not for younger anime fans. The storyline is complex and to really understand all of the layers going on you need to look at Wikipedia or doing research on your own. If you don't want to do all of that, the artwork alone is breathtaking. I would strongly recommend this a more mature fan of anime. If you're looking for giant robots or gravity defying huge female parts this is not for you. If you like a storyline that will make you think and artwork that is not static and lifeless this will be a feast of anime watching. Do watch the commentary at the end. It will answer some questions and ask others. A must see!

5.0 out of 5 stars a curious surprise..., December 18, 2010

By no means would I consider myself an anime buff (I only own a few: Darker Than Black, Wolf's Rain, Sword of the Stranger, Appleseed, Vexille, and now Ergo Proxy), but I was so pleasantly surprised by this collection. I bought it strictly on the synopsis because it seemed different. Since I am always on the look out for a new and interesting piece of anime, I am open to pretty much all sorts.

This one, admittedly, caught my eye because of the box art. Yes, I know I am "judging a book by its cover." But honestly, its just a still from a scene in the first episode but it seems to convey alot, just in the cover. So I read the description and thought that it sounded like a break from the typical "here is a hero against insurmountable odds, hoping to prevail in a war they cannot win." This anime is definately told precisely FOR the story. There is some good action sprinkled throughout the adventure, but the collection spends the majority of the time developing the characters and connecting the plots.

The amazon description is an accurate synopsis of the show, so I will not regergitate that all over again, suffice to say there is enough going on in the whole series that you almost HAVE to watch it over just to catch all the ideaology and psychology presented. It's a fun show if you're in to thinking about what's going on. Not for those who just want action with no substance behind it. I will definately be watching this series over and over again. I'm sure I will find something new about it each time.

It arrived on time and the show is one of the best I've seen since Death Note. The best part is you can re-watch this show over and over and never get tired of it.
