Ergonomic - the science of designing the workplace environment to fit the user. Proper ergonomic design is necessary to prevent repetitive strain injuries, which can develop over time and can lead to long-term disability.
The best way to reduce back & shoulder strain is to stand, however most of us work in offices where we sit at our desks for hours on end. When we sit our body weight is transferred to the seat, floor, backrest & armrests. If this weight is not transferred evenly this will begin to cause strain on our backs and shoulders. If you are able to create a seating position where your weight is supported evenly, this will alleviate neck, back & shoulder pain - Enter Ergonomic Seat Cushion
Using the Ergonomic Seat Cushion helps to absorb the pressure & weight when seated, relieving your lower back from this task. The seat cushion is also 3.5" thick allowing you to be lifted to an ergonomic seating position where you can keep your arms at a 90 degree angle when sitting at your desk (this is the ideal working position to relive neck, back & shoulder strain).
The memory foam in the seat cushion allows for constant support as you shift in your seat. The seat cushion was designed, so as you move about while seated your lower back is constantly supported and distributing your weight as evenly as possible. The 3.5" thick memory foam is ideal, because it will keep its original shape over time allowing you to work & sit more comfortably & pain free for years to come.

Not Hard, Just Perfect. Need a Neutral Color Though,
This review is from: Ergonomic Seat Cushion: 3.5" Thick Foam Seat Cushion
I don't know what the one reviewer is saying! I am sure his/her review had precluded many from enjoying this product. I was lucky to see the product first on Gaiam's official site where the reviews are great - 4.5 stars.
I really like the product, and can feel the difference right away from sitting, making working on the computer all day much more pleasant. I have minor scoliosis and a multitude of back problems. I am glad to find this product that's priced very reasonably for the quality compared to other products on the market. The long term quality (after more than 1 year of use) is yet to be seen. The only complaint I have about this product is the color. I called Gaiam and asked about another more neutral color offering (such as black which is not too much to ask for), but the custom rep was unwilling to discuss options, or unwilling to pass my request to product development or marketing. She ended up transferring me to a non working number just to get me off her back. In this world of telecommuting and flourishing small businesses, many people are working on the computer all day but not necessarily at the office. One color offering of the clinical blue is simply not enough. I suggest a dark gray and black to boot.

Cushion is Rock Hard,

This review is from: Ergonomic Seat Cushion: 3.5" Thick Foam Seat Cushion
This cushion is hard as a rock. So if you like firm cushions and only want to get pressure off your tail bone... then this might work for you.
But if you are trying to find a soft cushion for extra padding... this is not the cushion you want. It is harder than any padded furniture. This is hard like some cheap office furniture chairs. Even the molded shape is rigid. I can't imagine anyone feeling comfortable on this cushion unless the person is associated with the manufacturer or seller. There might be a few people who like really hard mattresses and hard chairs who might like this but they would be in the extreme minority. Save your money if you want to have cushioning which is softer than concrete. It might say memory foam on the description, but you couldn't flatten this cushion with a steam roller... quite seriously. It is that bad.

Great for support,

I've been sitting on seat cushions for over a decade. I take one almost everywhere I go due to an abdominal hernia. If I'm sitting on a hard surface without one, my life is torturous. And although this particular cushion isn't the most comfortable (4 stars instead of 5) it offers the best support of anything else I've tried. Basically I see it like this - if you want soft and comfortable, use a pillow. But if you need support because you have back issues, or in my case a hernia this will definitely help align your body and add support. Mine actually has softened a bit too. I think the more you use it, the softer it becomes as the foam eventually breaks down. Probably depends on how much you weigh too.
