This review is from: Ergotron MX Desk Mount LCD Arm (45-214-026) (Office Product)
I'm already a huge fan of Ergotron products going back to when I used to design and install computer rooms and data centers. So, when the time came for me to buy something for my home office, I did shop a bit but always came back to Ergotron. Last year I purchased the LX Dual Desk Mount Arm to support a 22" Samsung monitor and my Apple MacBook Pro 15". This setup has been awesome, providing me with a dual-monitor feature that is really a time saver.
I want to provide some key information to anyone considering this device that I think will help you decide. 1) I purchased this arm concerned it may not support the weight of the Apple iMac 27" computer. The computer with the base weighs in at 30.5 lbs and without the base is ~27.5 lbs. so based on the math, I'm well within the weight range of the MX Arm spec. That being said, since I already knew how to adjust my LX Dual Arm setup, I found the MX to be identical in adjustment and fitment capability. 2) Ergotron sent a nice package of bolts, screws, desk-mount optional hardware and even a set of tools to make the adjustments. Setting it up was simple and getting attached was fairly straight forward. They provide a wing-nut to tighten the base to the desk but I recommend if you have a heavy monitor or computer like I do, go to a nearby hardware store and buy a nylon-insert nut (I forgot the specific size, just take the bolt with you) and use that to fasten it to the desk. Be sure not to over tighten it or you could potentially damage your furniture and the swing arm. 3) If your computer or monitor leans toward the high end of the scale with respect to the specification of this swing arm, be sure to pre-tighten the adjustment screws before you put weight on it. You'll find it much easier to do and, easier to adjust afterward. I should have I know but I didn't keep track of how many revolutions I made on the neck and head adjustments but suffice it to say it was more than 20 full revolutions. You'll get a sense for how the tension is but just be careful not to over tighten. 4) Make sure you've assembled everything according to the spec but also make sure you've installed your mounting bracket correctly so that you can just simply lay the monitor or the computer on the MX Arm and hand tighten the large plastic-headed screws to the 100x100 mounting plate. This will make life very easy. Bottom line, I used the VESA Mount Adapter Kit for 24-inch/27-inch iMac and 24-inch LED Cinema Display - Apple Part Number: MC434ZM/A -- this worked perfectly and was very well made. This was a very straight forward and very effective solution for what I was trying to achieve. I'm now able to swing my Apple 27" iMac 180 degrees around on my desk, pivot it upward about 70 degrees and lower it if needed. It works very well, its very well made and I highly recommend this to anyone considering this sort of mount for your large iMac or Cinema displays!!!

This is one of those rare items "these days" that is just more than you expected all around. It's very well designed and works amazingly well with my 27" monitor. I purchased one that was nearly as expensive for my wife's 24" iMac about two years ago and it is a joke compared to this beast. Lets put it this way, If someone stole this one and the price for a new one had gone up to $350.00 I wouldn't even think twice about buying it again.

I ordered this for the Samsung 2433 lcd monitor. It holds the monitor perfectly. One thing to note as it isn't crystal clear in the installation instructions, once you attach the monitor you HAVE to adjust the tension or the arm just falls down. Once I realized that and adjusted the tension, it performed flawlessly. I could probably work upside down with this thing. Did I mention it LOOKS great as well? It is very functional but also very stylish. I recommend this for "heavier" monitors or all-in-one computers that weigh up to 30 pounds.

I got two of these arms to mount a Dell 30" (3007WFP HC) and Dell 20" (2001FP) rotated portrait. They are very different weights, with the tension adjusted they both sit exactly where I want them and do not move. I really have been pleased. I love not having anything under the monitors.
A minor issue: the 30: is pretty much the maximum you could use. It's only a few inches above the desk (which is ok on something that sized). The lower portion of this arm could be a couple inches taller and it would greatly increase the flexibility of this mounting arm. A potential major issue: I think this was designed by Skynet and it's going to be pissed when it realizes I have been using it's futuristic cyborg killer arm to hold up my monitors at a comfortable height. I suspect I will be targeted early.

The mechanism itself is great, very well thought - I will recommend to anyone. WOULD GIVE 5 STARS, But...
I am using an HP monitor (2710m). Both the monitor and the Mx arm are VESA 100x200mm compliant. Yet, the arm's mounting hardware does not fit in the reccessed VESA openning on the monitor. I do not know how the VESA describes the hole pattern and dimentions, and frankly, I do not care. As an OEM designer, Ergotron should have addressed this issue, and train their customer support to have technical knowledge. I never had so much trouble explaining the problem to two different reps. Can't Ergotron supply thewm with an exploded-view diagram of every product?? makes sense to me... My problem is still not resolved, and after all the 2710m is at least partially to blame. I think I will get my Dremel tool involved to mod the Ergotron mounts (~1/16 wide hardened-steel bracket has a 90* bend - not sure why. will have to remove the extra material to make the arm fit. I hope a 5 pack of reinforced cutting wheels will be enough...) Oh well, it will be a fun time, I am sure :)

GOOD: The MX Desk Mount is a fantastic product. It holds my 23 inch LCD monitor with no problems. It easily adjusts in many different dimensions. It doesn't fall or move under the weight of the monitor, as long as you take a few minutes to tune the springs to match the weight.
BAD: The one issue I have is that the "wrist" joint is not level. Thus, pivoting the monitor left to right along this joint makes the screen tilt within its own plane so that it is no longer level. Fortunately, the screen can be set to rotate and it is easily corrected, but it is just a minor pain. The solution would be that they need to make the bottom linkage of the "forearm" a little bit longer (it should form a parallelogram, but it is actually a trapezoid). I realize this is some advanced kinematics, but if anybody gets it, then that's great.

I got one for my Dell 30" U3011 monitor and it worked okay. After raising the arm by sliding a 2x4" block of wood under the mount, it worked perfectly! It allowed the monitor to rotate 90 degrees flawlessly into portrait mode. Without it being raised, the monitor was only 2.5" above the table. With the wood block, it was about 4.5" now and therefore no more neck strain!

From the photos you may have the impression that it can position your monitor high up off the work surface if needed. If you are mounting something the size and weight of an imac 27 you will have to adjust the tension a whole lot just to get your machine off the desk. The size and weight of the imac 27 are about as much as this device can handle. Be sure to check the max suggested weight. Nonetheless, eventually I was able to sock in the tension enough so that it supported my imac27. It took a whole lot of tightening, and initially it seemed like the computer was just too big and heavy.
It has a wide range of movement including a full 90 degree back tilt (which is great when it is time to clean the desk). It has really performed beautifully under a very heavy load. I have not had to adjust the tension since setting it the first time. It looks pretty snazzy with the screen just floating over the desk. Very impressed by the build of this device

I've been using personal computers since 1981, and always considered monitor arms to be an unnecessary extravagance, but the situation on my desk finally convinced me to take the plunge. Though I didn't like the idea of spending so much on a monitor arm, I also don't like buying cheap junk that breaks. My extensive research and comparison shopping led me here.
I was persuaded by the other positive reviews, but I was still unprepared for just how awesome this monitor arm truly is. The chrome-finished metal is massive and so generously used that I'm confident it could support a hell of a lot more weight than it's rated for. Everything about this arm screams quality, and although I had originally wanted to get a black monitor arm to match my monitor's black color, this arm is just so unstoppably sexy that I'm very glad I chose this one instead. Its solid look and feel, combined with its graceful styling, are simply a delight to behold. This is a product that will last a lifetime. It goes perfectly with my Samsung SyncMaster T260HD and (after proper adjustment of the spring tension) holds it exactly where I want it with no sagging or drifting. Amazon delivered it right on time (as usual) and I would not hesitate to buy one again -- although I doubt I will ever need to. Highly recommended.

This stand really works well specially designed for iMac or Apple display 27" which are over 35Lbs. Not an easy task to handle and fully control this size display but this stands does it.I highly recommend this if you have an iMac or Apple display 27" it works. |
