First off, let me start by saying our family loves Eric Carle. His books have been staples in my childhood and in my wife's childhood. One of the first books we received for our son was the Very Hungry Caterpillar. Our son enjoys that book immensely.

As for this particular set of cards, the set is almost perfect. The cards themselves are of superior quality. The cards are sturdy enough for our 5 month old to hold and to mouth. All of the cards are the classic Eric Carle artwork we've grown to love. As indestructible art, these cards excel. (The storage box is also of good quality. Both the box and the set of cards look like they will last a very long time.)

Sadly, I must subtract 1 star. As a flash card set, these cards do not aid in teaching numbers as well as they are beautiful to look at. Younger children do better with contrasting colors. Some of the flash cards could have provided better contrast in order for children to better distinguish the animals being counted. For example, the number 4 card depicts a parent fox with three kits (cubs) in a den. The den is surrounded by green grass muted by dark colors including reds. The kits themselves are a reddish color. It is possible to differentiate the number of foxes, but it is not as easy as some of the other cards. For example, the number 2 card has two yellow ducks on a white background, the number 9 and 10 cards feature penguins and fish contrasted on very simple backgrounds. These cards do a better job at providing contrasting colors helping children differentiate and count the animals on the card.

I should also note that the set is divided into two sets numbered from 1-10. The first set (of which I described in the previous paragraph), uses arabic numeral numbers (1,2,3 etc.) where as the second set uses the English word for the number. The English word set does better with the contrasting issue than the arabic numeral number set.

DON'T LET the contrasting issue stop you from buying this set. Older kids will be able to make out the harder to see characters and younger kids are just gonna love how durable and forgiving these cards are. Then you have Mr. Carle's beautiful artwork. That alone is worth the price of admission. I only go into describing the cards in the length I do so that parents will be prepared by knowing that some of the cards may be difficult to use as flash cards.

Be prepared, but BUY THE SET already.

UPDATE: As another buyer pointed out, the numbers are not roman numerals (I,II,III...etc.) but rather arabic numerals (1,2,3....etc.)

These flash cards are perfect for little hands. I give one to my son during his diaper change to keep his hands busy and he can do a little learning as well.

if you are looking for number flash cards and like eric carle these are a great set. you get 2 sets so you have pictures/numbers, and pictures/dots.

i also own the animal flash cards which i'm using as nursery decor. this set would be better as a teaching tool and not decor because as you go up the pictures start to get too busy.
