3.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly poor audio mix for a DVD! Save your money!
Has anybody noticed the poor audio on this DVD? It's horribly compressed!

Why would they use the audio mix from the original video as opposed to the mix that was used on the accompanying 2CD set release of "Eric Clapton - 24 nights"?

The CD-Set has a quite superb sound, but the DVD mix is almost unlistenable, everything is buried in the middle.

This review is from: Eric Clapton: 24 Nights (DVD)
Eric Clapton, in concert at the Royal Albert Hall, on DVD: What more is there for a Clapton fan? The 24 Nights Concert is the greatest concert Clapton has ever given. His solos are unbelievable (esp. on "Bad Love" and "Old Love") and the various arrangements (5 Piece Band - Phillinganes, East, Ferrone, Collins; Blues Band - Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Jamie Oldaker, et al; 9 Piece Band - Phillinganes, East, Ferrone, et al; and Orchestra) add interesting depth to Clapton's already strong music. Naturally, such a superior collection of music and an assemblage of musical talent is conveyed to the viewer with the latest and greatest of audio and video technology. The superb video quality and the LPCM audio (no Dolby Digital or DTS compression here!) brings out all Clapton's music and talent has to offer. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone with even a slight interest in Clapton and his music. It is a truly great work.

For all purposes, DVD gives you the technology to make it sound even better than on the audio CD.

WB hasn't even remixed the sound to Dolby Digital, that's how much care has been put into this (the picture could be better, too).

I can only conclude this must have been one of the first DVD releases. Maybe I'm just spoiled by "Hell freezes over" but IMHO WB should correct this flaw!

[And one more thing WB: The days of 90 min. videos should be over; this release could have been expanded to double its size given the material available].

A thorough disappointment!

3.0 out of 5 stars The video editors don't get it, March 9, 2001

This review is from: Eric Clapton: 24 Nights (DVD)
Like the others here, I wanted to see ERIC. I already have the CD - which is great. The video, however, doesn't always have the same exact version as the CD. Case in point - the best guitar solo on the CD, Pretending, is totally different on the video, and in fact much worse. What are the people who make these videos smoking? Just show use the musicians, hold still with the camera, and DON'T DO ANYTHING. Every time I watch it, I come away disappointed at what could have been.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great concert, but bad production., November 30, 1999

The wonderful 'Badge' isn't on this video, and a part of the solo in "Sunshine Of Your Love" is removed. 'Whatch Yourself', 'Have You Ever Loved A Woman' and 'Worried Life Blues' are the highlights, with Buddy Guy and Robert Cray on backing guitars. If you want an EC-video, then buy 'Unplugged'. Buy '24 Nights' on a CD.

I am a professional entertainer, guitarist and recording engineer since the mid 1960's.
I could not stand by and let somebody with NO recording expertise bash this recording.
He says, "No choice in sound selection", No surround sound?".
That's right Greg ! There is NO WAY to make a quality surround sound recording if it wasn't recorded that way originally.
Stereo recordings are generally superior after many years of serious development, and don't rely on " sonic gemicks" and " audio trickery".
Most of the people have given Eric's DVD a good recomendation for good reason. BUY IT ! Be careful who you listen to.
Thanks, DKW

This review is from: Eric Clapton: 24 Nights (DVD)
Eric Clapton 24 Nights takes you through a journey with his differnt bands including The 4 Piece Band, The Blues Band, The 9 Piece Band, and The Orchestra. This DVD runs 90 minutes with many special guests including Phil Collins, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Nathan East, and more. If your looking for a great Eric Clapton performence this one is for you! Their are many great songs including the bluesy Watch Yourself, The Orchestrated Bell Bottom Blues, Bad Love, Old Love, and White Room. If your looking for early songs try watching Sunshine Of Your Love with the the 4 Piece Band. These performences are just great recorded at the Royal Albert Hall, London in 1990 & 1991. This is truely a must have for all guitarist across the world!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent music but video lacks focus, April 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: 24 Nights [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The musical performances in this video are very good; Clapton shows his blues guitar mastery on this soundtrack. The mediocre rating I give is due to the videography. The image quality is excellent but the editing stinks. My objections to the editing are twofold:

1) The video tries to include other members of the band too often and the focus on Clapton is often lost. I bought the video to see CLAPTON.

2) Video shots of some of the other band members show them "getting into the music" a little too much. In other words, it looks fake. I would even go so far as to call it "hotdogging".

Compare this production to the much more straightforward but effective presentation of Stevie Ray Vaughan in the "Live at the El Macombo" video and you will see a glaring contrast.

In summary, it is too bad that this excellent soundtrack was marred by its failure to focus adequately on its main attraction- ERIC CLAPTON!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great live concert, February 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 24 Nights [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video captures Clapton in a variety of settings. While all of the selections are very good to great, Old Love shows Clapton at his blazing best. His solo is one of the best I have ever seen. Another standout performance is by background singer Katie Kissoon. Her vocal treatment at the end of Wonderful Tonight is unique and absolutely spell binding. I have shown that part to several musician friends. They all say her skills shown there took their breath away. For a Clapton fan this is a must have video.

5.0 out of 5 stars live clapton at his best, February 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 24 Nights [VHS] (VHS Tape)
24 nights is Clapton at his pre unplugged full tilt electric best. Sometimes his live shows are uninspired, but this video is not to be missed. The editing is excellent and guitar players will love the nice shots of his left & right hand technique. Nice cameos by Robert Cray/Buddy Guy & Phil Collins. I bought this video in 1991 or 1992 and it still is one I pop in often. "Old Love" and "Bad Love" are the highlights plus excellent rearranged versions of his older stuff. I have most of his film footage & videos, but if you only want 1 Clapton video this is the one to buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality shines through, July 24, 2007
By
This review is from: Eric Clapton: 24 Nights (DVD)
This is a fine recording of Claptons fabled London Albert Hall concerts from the early 90's.

Starting with the 4 piece band you get:
Running on Faith
White Room
Sunshine of your Love

Then the Blues Band:
Watch Yourself
Have you ever loved a woman
Worried life blues

Then the nine piece band:
Pretending
Bad love
Old Love
Wonderful Tonight

The Orchestra and band:
Bell Bottom Blues
Hard Times
Edge of Darkness

This all done very professionally and there are some great moments interspersed with just a few I could have done without. The live version of the 'Edge of Darkness' theme is tremendously powerful, and the Blues set is my favourite overall. This has Jonnie Johnson on Piano and Robert Cray and Buddy Guy on Guitar.

Well worth buying overall.
