Terrible Book, December 3, 2007
This review is from: Eric Johnson - Ah Via Musicom (Transcribed Scores) (Paperback)
I expected much more from Hal Leonard. This book is terrible. It does have guitar, bass, and drum parts, but don't be fooled. Instead of using the tab notation that all guitar players know and understand, they completely reinvent it. They use various letters of the alphabet to represent different techniques. It wouldn't be so bad if they at least used the letters that the name of the technique actually starts with (eg. "b" for bend). Well, that would make too much sense. Instead they use "c" for a bend, "qc" is a slight bend, "u" for pre-bend and "d" for release...you get the picture. Does that make any sense? Maybe I'm missing something, as I cannot for the life of me understand why. I know this sounds knitpicky, but when I try to read through a piece, it's pretty confusing and annoying; and I am a professional musician that's played for 20 years. I guess I could get used to it after a while, but I don't want to, nor to I plan to. Why fix what is not broken...they should have just used standard tab notation. In addition, I was working through "Cliffs of Dover" and the fingerings they use in the tab are almost completely worthless. My guess is that a skilled guitar player did not come up with the fingerings. The notes are right, but there are much easier ways to play some of this...and I didn't want to arrange the piece to make it playable, but I guess if I'm using this book I'll have to. On the next cold winter night, this book is kindling.

Perfect transcriptions, June 4, 2010
This review is from: Eric Johnson - Ah Via Musicom (Transcribed Scores) (Paperback)
As a guitar player of close to 15 years I wanted to correct the fact that this isn't rated 5 stars. Sad that I can only rate it once. Someone left a 1 star review because they wanted wrong transcriptions? I think that's incredibly unfair to the people who worked to bring us this book. It's an invaluable guide to the mind of Eric Johnson, who for all intents and purposes is a god of the guitar. You can always take a beautiful song and dumb it down. That's what internet tabs are for. This book shows you how Eric plays it. If you want crap, you can get it anywhere. If you want accuracy, go for this book.

This is a great transcription of a legendary album, December 7, 2010
This review is from: Eric Johnson - Ah Via Musicom (Transcribed Scores) (Paperback)
I saw some other reviews and after a) watching Eric Johnson's live Anaheim, CA DVD and b) working through this book, I can attest to the fact that this is very accurate to the way Eric plays his songs. There's no reason you can't change fingerings for your own needs or taste, which I definitely do with some of Eric's stuff, but if you want to know the way the legendary Eric Johnson plays his stuff then this is the ticket. Excellent transcription and detailed notations are included to help you understand some of the playing nuances that you might never have figured out on your own. Buy the DVD I mentioned too as it is an unbelievable performance and offers incredible insight to his highly unique and insanely technical and difficult to mimic technique. That guy is just wired differently than the rest of us!
