Format: Paperback
"Erie Water West: A History of the Erie Canal, 1792-1854" by Robert E. Shaw is an absolutely compelling saga of U.S. commercial development during the 19th century, next to which the Panama Canal [1914] and going to the moon [1969] fade in significance. A very well written account of the people who built the canal and the political intrigue surrounding its development. Enough detail to satisfy the serious history student, yet not so much as to bog down the story.
