About the Author

Georgann and Mike Wachter have been diving around the world since the early 1970’s. They discovered diving while snorkeling in the Mediterranean Sea in 1972 during a backpacking trip through Europe. Since that time, they have visited many sites in the Caribbean, Atlantic, Pacific, and Great Lakes. However, nowhere else in the world have they discovered the kind of pristine and perfectly preserved shipwrecks that lie in the fresh waters of the Great Lakes.

Living near Lake Erie led to the fascination with Lake Erie shipwrecks that drove the extensive research effort that is exhibited in Erie Wrecks East and Erie Wrecks West. Early on, guests diving aboard the Wachter’s boat would ask about the details of a shipwreck while en route to the site. In order to answer these questions, Mike and Georgann began keeping a notebook on board that contained photos and information on many of the shipwrecks they were diving. This kept Mike from making up false stories to answer the many questions. As the notebook grew, many friends suggested that the book should be published. Once the decision was made to publish a book on Lake Erie shipwrecks, the real work began. What was once a part time hobby has become a full time investigation of the myths and realities behind the thousands of shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. The Wachters have published three books, and several magazine articles, but their work is only beginning. With over 2,000 ships known to have sunk in Lake Erie alone, we can look forward to many more articles, books, and shipwreck materials from this husband and wife team.

Georgann is an accomplished researcher who is sought after as a speaker on sport diving, Great Lakes shipwrecks, and aquatic life. Mike makes his living as a management consultant and public speaker. For both Georgann and Mike, their first love is shipwreck diving. The collaboration of Georgann’s love of research and Mike’s love of story telling provides the fuel for the Erie Wrecks series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST have for divers, February 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Erie Wrecks East (Paperback)
A well organized reference of shipwrecks in Lake Erie, Erie Wrecks East provides vivid discriptions of Lake Erie's underwater treasures. The authors' 20 years of SCUBA diving in the Great Lake provide an insight that is unavailable in most other works about the wrecks in Lake Erie.
