Living near Lake Erie led to the fascination with Lake Erie shipwrecks that drove the extensive research effort that is exhibited in Erie Wrecks East, Second edition, Erie Wrecks & Lights and Erie Wrecks West. Early on, guests diving aboard the WachterÂs boat would ask about the details of a shipwreck while en route to the site. In order to answer these questions, Mike and Georgann began keeping a notebook on board that contained photos and information on many of the shipwrecks they were diving. This kept Mike from making up false stories to answer the many questions. As the notebook grew, many friends suggested that the book should be published. Once the decision was made to publish a book on Lake Erie shipwrecks, the real work began. What was once a part time hobby has become a full time investigation of the myths and realities behind the thousands of shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. The Wachters have published four books, and several magazine articles, but their work is only beginning. With over 2,000 ships known to have sunk in Lake Erie alone, we can look forward to many more articles, books, and shipwreck materials from this husband and wife team.
Georgann is an accomplished researcher who is sought after as a speaker on sport diving, Great Lakes shipwrecks, and aquatic life. Under Mike's tenure as president of the Maritime Archaeological Society 6 wrecks in Lake Erie waters received permanent moorings. Mike makes his living as a management consultant and public speaker. For both Georgann and Mike, their first love is shipwreck diving. The collaboration of GeorgannÂs love of research and MikeÂs love of story telling provides the fuel for the Erie Wrecks series.
