Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Who would think that Michel Legrand, well known for his movie music and jazz piano playing, would turn out to be such an excellent player of Satie. This spare, often sarcastically humorous music is extremely distant from Legrand's own compositions. Yet he plays the pieces with poise, clarity, and sensitivity to Satie's special world of elegant zaniness. The famous Gymnopédies are here, played ideally at a tempo which is almost too slow. The main complaint against this disc is that it should have had more music (only 54"), but what is here is excellent, and very well recorded. --Leslie Gerber

5.0 out of 5 stars A sensitive & thoughtful recital, November 20, 2011
This review is from: Erik Satie by Michel Legrand (Audio CD)
The most frustrating thing about many recordings of Eric Satie's solo piano music is that those famous pianists never get it right as to how to judge tempi. They play it either too slow or too fast. This French pianist is the first sensible pianist I've come across, who knows how to play Satie's piano works. His tempo is perfectly judged for every slow piece and the fast pieces are played with stunningly sensitive and light touch, just an ideal sort of pianism for such music. It's a shame he didn't record the complete works, as I'm very disappointed by Jean-Yves Thibaudet's clinical complete recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quirky, Playful, Humourous, and kinda loony!, May 5, 2000

This review is from: Erik Satie by Michel Legrand (Audio CD)
This piano music is just my style. Short pieces to bring in one of nearly every mood. I love the fact that each one of them is a musical statement in its own right. This truly shows that music doesn't have to be big to be good, nor does it have to be overly dramatic. Truly a wonderful collection of quirky little musical statements that make the heart glad!

The Erik Satie CD by M. Legrand is a great introduction to Satie's music, especially if paired with the Magic of Satie CD.
