I have fallen in love with Ernest and Celestine. Gabrielle Vincent conveys amazing emotion in these wonderful little drawings. How is it even possible to make a mouse, small rat really, look so very much like the human child she personifies. I could swear she is one of my own children. And the tenderness Ernest shows for his little charge just melts my heart. The Picnic is exactly the way any little girl with her heart set on having a day outside would want a rainy day to end. It is so endearing that it doesn't even seem odd that all of the children in this book are mice and all of the adults are children.
